95-33RESOLUTION NO. 95 -33 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, TO THE PINELLAS COUNTY COMMISSION, THE PINELLAS COUNTY TOURIST DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL d /b /a ST.PETERSBURG /CLEARWATER AREA CONVENTION AND VISITORS BUREAU, AND THE PINELLAS COUNTY LEGISLATIVE DELEGATION RE: TOURIST DEVELOPMENT TAX; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, pursuant to §125.0104 Florida Statutes, Pinellas County imposes a 3% tax on lodging establishments throughout the County; and WHEREAS, the proceeds of the tourist development tax may only be used for certain purposes which include the promotion of tourism and the funding of Tourist Bureaus; and WHEREAS, approximately 32% of the tourist development tax collected in Pinellas County is generated by businesses located in the City of Clearwater, and WHEREAS, since the tax has been imposed, City of Clearwater businesses have collected over 28 million dollars in tourist development tax dollars the majority of which have not been spent to the benefit of City of Clearwater tourist and convention businesses; and WHEREAS, despite the significant amount of tax paid by City of Clearwater businesses, the City of Clearwater businesses are not adequately represented by or served by the St. Petersburg /Clearwater Area Convention and Visitors Bureau and do not benefit proportionately from the tourist development dollars spent; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA: Section 1. That Pinellas County and the Pinellas County Tourist Development Council d /b /a St. Petersburg /Clearwater Area Convention and Visitors Bureau is hereby requested to spend proportionately funds collected from the City of Clearwater on tourist and convention business in the city. We expect the bureau to work arm and arm with City staff to develop to the fullest extent the convention and tourist business within the City of Clearwater. Section 2. That a copy of this resolution shall be sent to the County Commission, the Pinellas County Tourist Development Council and the members of the Pinellas County Legislative delegation. -
