ORDINANCE NO. 1105
AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 22, TRAFFIC,
ARTICLE IVs STOPPING, STANDING AND PARKING,
OF THE CODE OF ORDINANCES, CITY OF CLEARWATER,
FLORIDA, 1962, REPEALING SECTION 22-109 IN ITS
ENTIRETY AND ENACTING A NEW SECTION 22-109
PRESCRIBING THE STEPS TO BE TAKEN BY A MOTORIST
UPON LEAVING AN AUTOMOBILE UNATTENDED,
INCLUDING REMOVAL OF THE IGNITION KEY FROM
THID VEHICLE; AUTHORIZING THE POLICE TO REMOVE
IGNITION KEYS LEFT IN UNATTENDED VEHICLES; PRO-
VIDING PENALTIES FOR THE VIOLATION OF THIS
ORDINANCE; REPEALING ALL ORDINANCES OR PARTS
OF ORDINANCES IN CONFLICT HEREWITH; PROVIDING
FOR THE SEPARABILITY OF THE PROVISIONS HEREOF
AND PROVIDING FOR AN EFrECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, automobile thefts have shown an alarming increase
over tho past ton years; and
WHEREAS, large percentage of automobile thefts are of automobiles
left unattended with the key in the ignition or the ignition unlocked; and
WHEREAS. this negligence on the part of the motorists provides
the opportunity to juvenile and teenage offenders as well as to professional
automobile thieves to commit this crime; and
WHEREAS, it has been demonstrated that the enactment and
enforcement of Lock Your Car Ordinances drastically reduce automobile
thefts;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA:
Section 1. That Section 22-Ifl9 of Chapter 22, Traffic, Article IV,

Stopping, Standing and Parking, of the Code of Ordinances, City of
Clearwater, Florida, 1962, is herebyrepealed in its entirety and the
following is enacted in lieu thereof:
Sec. 22-109. Leaving Unattended Motor Vehicle.
a. No person driving or in charge of a motor vehicle shall permit
it to stand unattended in any public place, street, or parking
lot, either private or public, without first stopping the engine,
locking the ignition, removing the ignition key from the vehicle,
effectively setting the brake thereon and, when standing upon'
any grade, turning the front wheels to the curb or side of the
highway.
