(2) When water blisters or air blisters exist in old roofing, blisters shall be cut open and nail/down and mopped down before applying additional roofing. (3) When existing roofing surface is gravel or like, existing gravel shall be thoroughly removed before applying additional roofing. (4) When existing roofing is wood shingles, metal shingles, or other such rough surfaces, such roofs shall be re-sheathed, or not less than one layer of 1/211 Rigid Board Insulation applied over such roofing to provide a smooth surface before applying additional roofing, except that asphalt shingles may be applied over existing; wood shingle roofs after nailing down or removing curled, buckled or loose wood shin- gles and in such manner as to comply with the directions of the manu- facturer of the asphalt shingles. fl When existing roofing is corrugated metal or V Crimp Metal. (2y Re-roofing to be applied in accordance with new roofing specifications. 102 BUILT-UP SATURATED FELT AND GRAVEL ROOFS- 102.1 GENERAL : (a) Pre'naration of Surface: Before starting the ap- plication of all roofing membranes, all roof decks shall be broom-cleaned; parapet walls, vertical walls, penthouses, and similar structures above the roof level shall have been ccmpleted, and all flat roof decks shall have been provided with a cant-strip where the roof deck ;loins a vertical surface. Cant-strips shall be nailable material and shall extend at least four inches up the vertical surfaces. Wood roof decks shall be solidly sheathed. Concrete roof decks shall be smooth and free from laitance. Portland cement' roof decks shall be thoroughly dry and gypsum decks shall be surface dry, before starting application of roofing. All eave fascias shall be completed before completion of final roofing. (b) MATERIALS Mineral surface and smooth surface cap sheets, saturated felts, roofing asphalts, and roofing pitches shall be delivered in original packages bearing the manufacturers label and Underwriters Laboratories label. (c) ANCHORING: Unless otherwise specified herein, anchor sheets shall be secured by nailing to wood, gypsum or any other roof deck which is'nailable and shall be solidly mopped to-Portland cement concrete roof decks. (d) NAILING: Nails in nominal one inch lumber shall be not small- er than 12 gauge wire nails with heads not less than three-eights inch diameter and not less than 3/4 inch in length. MEMBRANE BASE.,FLASH INGS 10'3.1 Pelt used in the construction of the built-up roof shall be car- ried over the cant strips or turned up the wall. When the layers of felt are carried over the cant ,trips, they shall be nailed every 12 inches along'a line one and one-half inches down from the top edge of the cant strip. 103..2- Each layer of felt base flashing shall be uniformly mopped with 115L, 0itumen or plastic cement, applied at the rate of not less than 20 pounds per 100 square feet for each mopping. 103.3 There shall be not less than one 30 pound felt starting at a PUIRL-one inch out from the cant strip and carried up the wall 3 inches plus one 90 pound slate starting at a -noint 2 inches out from the cant strip and carried up the wall 5 inches. 103.4 Roofing felts wrapping parapet walls shall be as follows: One 90 pound slatel one 30 pound felt or two 15 pound felts, coated in between each layer. Except for an overlapping lip, tile shall have a minimum thickness of not less than one-half inch for barrel tile, and three eights inch for shingle tile. Tile shall be air dry when tested. (b) Roof the shall comply with the physical test requirements as follows: (1) Barrel tile shall be test loaded by being supported on sand 2 inches deep in a sand box 4 inches wider than the width of the tile. Shingle the shall be test loaded by being supported on sand filled cloth tubes parallel to the edge of the tile. Sand tubes shall be two-inch diameter loosely filled with dry 40-60 silica sand and shall be placed under the edge of the with center-to-center distances equal to the width of the tile. (2) A test load shall he applied on a three-inch-square steel plate bearing on a sand bag at the center of the tile. (3) The breaking load of any individual shingle tile shall be not less than 200 pounds and the average breaking load of five shingle tile shall be not less than 250 pounds. The breaking load of any individ- ual barrel tile shall be not less than 250 pounds and the average breaking load of five barrel the shall be not less than 300 pounds. 104.3 ABSORPTION: Roof tiles shall absorb not more than 10 percent t% of the dry weight of the the during a 24 hour water immersion test which shall be made as follows: dry one or more tile to constant weight in an oven at a temperature of 210 to 220 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove from oven and allow to cool to room temperature. Immerse in water at temperature of 60 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit for 24 hours.
