No. 81 -69
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF
THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA, OPPOSING
S 898 WHICH WOULD TAKE AWAY THE POWER OF
LOCAL GOVERNMENTS TO REGULATE RATES SET BY
CABLE TELEVISION FRANCHISE OPERATORS.
WHEREAS, the Senate Commerce, License and Transportation
Committee presently has before it S 898 part of which would prohibit
municipal governments from regulating rates charged by cable television
franchise holders; and
WHEREAS, passage of such a bill would severely weaken the role
of municipal government in franchising and establishing cable systems; and
WHEREAS, no real need exists for Congress to act to take away
municipal power in this area; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Clearwater wishes
to go on record as opposing such bill and requeststhe Senate to remove the
cable deregulation provision from S 898.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
IN SESSION DULY AND REGULARLY ASSEMBLED, AS
FOLLOWS:
1. That the City Commission of the City of Clearwater hereby
expresses its opposition to the cablct deregulation provision contained in
S 898 and requests the members of the Senate to delete the cable deregulation
provisions from S 898.
2. That copies of this resolution be sent to Senator Lawton Chiles,
Senator Paula Hawkins and the National League of Cities.
3. That this resolution shall become effective immediately upon
its adoption.
