No. 79 - 91
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION.OF THE
CITY OF C;T..EARWATER, FLORIDA, REQUESTING THE
STATE LEGISLATURE TO RE-EXAMINE FLORIDA LAWS
RELA TING TO TAX EXEMPTION FOR CHURCHES AND
NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS.
WHEREAS, the State Legislature has in existence a committee to
study the current Florida tax laws and structure, and such committee is
presently holding hearings; and
WHEREAS, a need exists by virtue of the large number of tax exempt
non-profit organizations and churches existing in Florida to examine the
statutory framework under which such organizations receive tax exemption
for their real property: and
WHEREAS, the growth of the nwnber of such organizations is serving
to cause an erosion of the local tax base in cities such as Clearwater,
Florida; and
WHEREAS, the City Commission of the City of Clearwater wishes
to request the State Legislature to review the present statutory scheme
providing for real property tax eJ~cmption:
NOW. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED B Y THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
IN SESSION DULY AND REGULARLY ASSEMBLED,. AS
FOLLOWS:
1. That the City Commission of the City of Clearwater hereby
requests the State Legislature as part of its study of the current Florida tax
structure to carefully reNexamine those laws contained in Chapter 196
of the Florida Statutes which provide for real property tax exemption for
non-profit o;rganizations and churches.
Z. That copies of this Resolution be forwarded to the Pinellas
County Legislative Delegation, the Speaker of the Florida House of
Representatives, the President of the Florida Senate and the Florida
League of Cities.
