A RESOLUTION OPPOSING TERMINATION OF THE
FLORIDIAN PASSENGER LINE FROM AMTRAK
F ROUTE SERVICE.
WHEREAS, the Floridian route has been operating between Chicago
and Miami for over one hundred (I00) years and carries passengers embarking
and debarking in Clearwater; and
WHEREAS, the transportation of people is crucial to continued
tourism, Clearwater's most vital industry; and
WHEREAS, an acknowledged fuel shortage will decrease options
for private automobile travel within the coming years; and
WHEREAS, the report by the Secretary of Transportation gives
evidence that rail travel increases during times of fuel shortage; and
WHEREAS, in January, 1978, the Board of Directors of Amtrak voted
to reroute the Floridian to include Atlanta along the route; and
WHEREAS, such rerouting did not take place;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
IN SESSION DULY AND REGULARLY ASSEMBLED, AS
FOLLOWS;
1. That the City Commission of the City of Clearwater opposes
termination of the Floridian passenger train service unless the service
modifications suggested herein are made and given a fair trial period to
increase patronage on the Floridian route.
2. Further, that the City Commission believes all options for
continuation of service have not been explored and that these available options
include rerouting of the Floridian through Indianapolis and Atlanta and adjusting
the frequency of service.
3. The City of Clearwater authorizes testimony to this effect to be
given at a public hearing to be held in Tampa, Florida, on July 10, 197 B.
by the United States Department of Transportation.

Resolution to the Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation;
Honorable C. W. "Bill's Young, U. S. Representative; Honorable Richard
Kelly, U. S. Representative; Honorable Lawton Chiles, U. S. Senator;
Honorable Richard Stone, U. S. Senator; the Chairmen of the U. S. Senate
Committee on Appropriations and Committees on Commerce, Science and
Transportation; the Chairmen of the U. S. House of Representativns Committees
on Appropriations and on Interstate and Poreign Commerce; the Chairman
of the Metropolitan Planning Organization; and all municipalities within '
Pinellas County.
5. That this Resolution shall take effect immediately. upon its
adoption.
