A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER,
FLORIDA, OFFICIALLY REQUESTING STATE FUNDING FOR THE CONSTRUCTION
OF A NEH BRIDGE SPANNING CLEARHATER PASS TO SAND KEY.
WHEREAS. the City of Clearwater is presently engaged in preliminary
planning and design for the construction of a replacement bridge spanning
Clearwater Pass to Sand Key, and
WHEREAS. the present 2400 foot bascule bridge built in 1962 is in a
weakened condition due to the recent damage suffered from Hurricane Elena and
the scou ri ng and eras i on of sand around the bri dge pili ngs cau sed by the
closing of Dunedin Pass. and
WHEREAS, it is important for the City Commission to provide a safe and
durable structure that will not only facilitate safe and efficient
transportation but also provide a safe hurricane evacuation route for the
residents of Sand Key, and
WHEREAS, the construction of a new bridge is in the State Department of
Transportationls interest, because without it, more traffic will be diverted
to State Route 60 and U. S. 19 thereby, substanti ally increasi ng traffic
congestion, and
WHEREAS, several alternatives for repair or replacement of the present
bridge have been explored, and
WHEREAS, it is deemed most appropriate that the existing bridge be
replaced with a new structure, and
VHEREAS. this structure will require an estimated $11 to $14 million
dollars to complete, and
WHEREAS, the funding of a project of this magnitUde is clearly outside
the funding capability of the City of Clearwater, and
WHEREAS, we urgently 'require technical assistance and outside funding
assistance from the Florida Dep~.rtment of Transportation to erect a new
structure.
NOW. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED. that the City Commission unanimously and
u~ge~tly requests both technical and financial assistance of the Florida
Department of Transportation in the completion of this vital project by adding
this project to the Departmentls Five (5) Year Construction Plan, or other
approp,'fate State or Federal fundi ng program, and

needed funds and the scheduling of this project as soon as is practicable.
