A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
URGING THE STATE OF FLORIDA AND THE UNITED STATES
CONGRESS TO RETURN THE HIGHWAY BEAUTIFICATION ACIJ.I
TO ITS ORIGINAL PURPOSE TO ERADICATE BILLBOARDS
FROM OUR HIGHWAYS AND RES'fORE SCENIC BEAUTY.

WHEREAS, the Highway Beauti~ication Act was supposed to eradicate
billboards from our highways 1 and
WHEREAS, this law has been eroded by amortization laws, tree-
cutting allowances and use of monopolesl and
WHEREAS, it is the desire of the citizens of the City of
Clearwater that the beauty of our highways be protected for the
welfare and safety of all citizens:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY
COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
IN SESSION DULY AND REGULARLY ASSEMBLED, AS
FOLLOWS:
1. That the United States Congress is urged to hold hearings
into the erosion of the Highway Beautification Act and to act to
return it to its original intention of preserving the beauty of
our land.
2. That the State of Florida is urged to pass legislation
controlling billboards in order to preserve the beauty of our State
and to protect the welfare and safety of our citizens.
3. That this Resolution shall become effective irnmediately
upon its passage.
