EROSION CONTROL MEASURES
3.2.1 Silt Fence:
Use silt fence or straw bales at all locations where sheet flow runoff leaves
the site. It is not necessary to use these at locations where runoff enters
the site. Silt fence is also used for inlet protection and within dry retention
ponds to filter runoff prior to discharge. Do not use silt fence or hay bales
in water bodies. Use turbidity barriers when the barriers must be placed in
water bodies.
3.2.2 Straw Bales:
A straw bale barrier is a temporary sediment barrier consisting of a row of
anchored straw bales, The primary use and purpose of a straw bale barrier
is the same as that of a silt fence. Refer to the previous section for
recommendations, Straw bales can also be used in ditches as check dams.
Use F.D,O.T. Index 102 for determining spacing and configuration of bales used
as check dams along ditches.
Sediment deposits should be removed when the level of deposition reaches
approximately 1/2 the height of the bale. The useful life of straw bales is
about 3 months.
Straw bales have less filtering efficiency than silt fence, but their flow
capacity is greater.
3.2.3 Staked Turbidity Barrier:
Unlike silt fence, this material is impermeable, thus totally blocking any
flow. Its main purpose is to contain silts and sediments to a particular
location. Use stakes turbidity barrier in permanent water bodies that are
less than 0.91 m (3 feet) deep. F.D,O,T, Index 103 shows the construction
details.
3.2.6 Storm Drain Inlet Protection:
This is a filtering measure placed around curb and ditch bottom inlets to
trap sediment before it can enter inlet structures and the associated storm
drainage systems. Inlet protection con be provided by hay bales, silt fence,
concrete block and gravel, wire mesh and gravel. F.D.O,T. Index 102
shows typical arrangements. Inlet protection should be provided for all
inlets receiving runoff from disturbed areas.
3.2.11: Soil TrackinQ Device (STPD):
An STPD is a bed of stones that vehicles travel over prior to leaving
disturbed areas. The primary purpose of the STPD is to reduce the amount
of soil tracked off the site by vehicles, The rough surface of the stone will
shake the soil off of the tires as the vehicle goes over the entrance. A
STPD should be constructed at points where traffic leaves or enters
disturbed areas such as pond sites or stockpile areas. It should be
constructed prior to the associated area being disturbed. An interim CAD
detail of the STPD has been sent to the districts and is included in
Appendix 8.
STORMWATER SYSTEM OPERATION/MAINTENANCE
.
1) REMOVE ALL SAND, SILT AND DEBRIS FROM PARKING AREAS AND FROM AROUND DRAINAGE
INLETS OR AS REQUIRED. POSITIVE EFFORTS SHALL BE MADE TO PRECLUDE THE DEPOSIT OR
ACCUMULATION OF GRASS CLIPPINGS, LEAVES, ORGANIC MATTER OR ANY MATERIAL WHICH WILL
BE DETRIMENTAL TO THE FUNCTIONING OF THE INFILTRATION SYSTEM.
2) CHECK WEIR OR ORIFICE IN ALL CONTROL STRUCTURES PERIODICALLY TO ASSURE THAT THEY
ARE FREE OF DEBRIS WHICH MAY HAVE AN EFFECT ON THEIR HYDRAULIC FUNCTION.
