Parachuting Fact Sheet — Constraints & Limitations
Weather
* We cannot legally jump through clouds & the aircraft must be 500 feet below the clouds, which
means for a jump at 3000 feet above ground level (AGL) the clouds must be 3500 AGL or higher (FAA)
* We cannot jump in ground winds above 15 MPH (insurance requirement)
* Winds above 20 MPH below 1000 feet, and winds above 30 MPH above 1000 AGL are safety issues.
Our parachutes have a forward speed of 15-20 MPH and anything above that means we are backing into
the landing area (Safety)
* The rain will ruin our parachutes which cost almost $10000 each. We will generally jump in a light
mist, but we cannot jump in a down pour or into standing water or an extremely wet, muddy landing
site, unless of course you are willing to buy us new parachutes! Q (practicality)
Altitude
* 2000 feet AGL is the legal minimum jump altitude and we routinely increase that to 3000 feet or
higher based on conditions (FAA / safety)
* For free fall formations (holding hands while falling 120 mph) or tandem skydives (which are NOT a
part of our normal show and MUST be included in the agreement early on for an additional fee), we
need a minimum of 10000 feet AGL and an aircraft the size of a Cessna 208 or larger (safety)
Landing Area
* The legal minimum landing area is 5000 square feet, or 50 feet x 100 feet. For safety, The Chuters
increase that minimum to 150 feet x 150 feet. That is still very small, and we reserve the right to
increase it based on altitude above sea level, obstacles in the area, size of our flags & location/size of the
crowd. Because stadiums present a unique safety challenge, we require the entire field to be generally
clear. We have a 100% safety record & we intend to keep it that way! (FAA)
Aircraft and Pilot
* The aircraft must be certified to fly with doors off or able to be opened in flight and the pilot must
have a commercial rating (FAA)
* Skydiving pilots operate on Visual Flight Restrictions. The pilot cannot legally fly the AC through a
cloud. They must go above, below or around it and they must do so by hundreds of feet. If the clouds
are solid, the aircraft must stay below them so the pilot can see the ground (FAA)
* Cessna 206s and smaller are only good for low level flag and smoke jumps, not for building free fall
formations or doing Tandem Parachute Jumps. For these events, a Cessna 208 or bigger is required due
to the size & location of the door and number of people carried (practicality)
