03/11/1998CITY COMMISSION SPECIAL MEETING CITY OF CLEARWATER March 11, 1998 Present: J. B. Johnson Vice-Mayor/Commissioner Robert Clark Commissioner Ed Hooper Commissioner Michael J. Goudeau City Clerk Mary K. “Sue” Diana Assistant City Clerk Absent: Rita Garvey Mayor/Commissioner Karen Seel Commissioner The Vice-Mayor called the meeting to order at 12:00 noon at City Hall. The purpose of the meeting was to canvass the returns from the March 10, 1998 election. The City Clerk presented three certificates of testing of the automatic tabulating equipment dated as follows: March 5, 1998 - 9:05 a.m. March 10, 1998 - 9:27 a.m. March 10, 1998 - 10:01 a.m. Commissioner Clark moved to accept the three certificates of testing. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. The City Clerk presented the tabulations of votes as follows: A. Absentee Ballot Report: Total returned 795 Total rejected 16 No signature 3 No witness 11 Signature variation 1 Signed by other than voter 1 Total accepted 779 B. Total Precinct and Absentee Ballots City Commissioner, Seat 5 J. B. Johnson 3,579 Bill Kirbas 2,097 Referendum Questions: Yes No #1 - Employee’s Pension Plan 4,010 1,643 #2 - Lease of City Property to Head Start 4,667 1,042 #3 - City Recreation/Open Space Property 3,862 1,809 Total ballots cast 5,914 Total registered voters 71,248 Commissioner Hooper moved to accept the City Clerk’s report and declare the results as reported official. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. Commissioner Clark moved to declare J.B. Johnson elected to Commission Seat #5. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. Commissioner Hooper moved to accept Referendum Questions 1, 2 and 3 approved. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. Commissioner Johnson thanked the citizens who voted for him and looked forward to serving the City for another three years. He expressed his disappointment in the low voter turnout. The City Clerk congratulated Commissioner Johnson on being re-elected and thanked her staff for their work regarding the election. The meeting adjourned at 12:07 p.m.
