The series SSG is a non-adjustable return grille made with louvered
blades for limited vision or exterior applications, The blades are
reinforced from the rear on approximate 12" centers,
Constructed from type 304 stainless steel with satin finish standard,
Type 316 stainless steel also available atan additional cost.
Specify Series 8-44 opposed blade damper to make return register,
The 8-44 OSD assures even distribution of air across the grille face as
well as positive volume control.

60~.4 Balanced return air.
.v' Restricted return air occurs in buildings when returns are located in central zones and closed interior
doors impede air flow to the return grill or when ceiling spaces are used as return plenums and fire
walls restrict air movement from one portion of the return plenum to another, Provisions shall be made
in both residential and commercial buildings to avoid unbalanced air flows and pressure differentials
caused by restricted return air. Pressure differentials across closed doors where returns are centrally
located shall be limited to 0,01 inch we (2,5 pascals) or less. Pressure differentials across fire walls in
ceiling space plenums shall be limited to 0.01 inch we (2,5 pascals) by providing air duct pathways or
air transfer pathways from the high pressure zone to the low zone,
Exceptions:
1, Transfer ducts may achieve this by increasing the return transfer one and one-half
times the cross-sectional area (square inches) of the supply duct entering the room or space
it is serving and the door having at least an unrestricted 1-inch (25 mm) undercut to achieve
proper return air balance,
2, Transfer grilles shall use 50 square inches (,03 m 2) (of grille area) to 100 cfm (,05 m
3/S) (of supply air) for sizing through-the-wall transfer grilles and using an unrestricted 1-inch
(25 mm) undercutting of doors to achieve proper return air balance.
3. Habitable rooms only shall be required to meet these requirements for proper balanced
return air excluding bathrooms, closets, storage rooms and laundry rooms, except that all
supply air into the master suite shall be. included,

SECTION 601
GENERAL
601.1 Scope.
Duct systems used for the movement of air in air-conditioning, heating, ventilating and exhaust systems
shall conform to the provisions of this chapter except as otherwise specified in Chapters ~and L.
Exception: Ducts discharging combustible material directly into any combustion chamber shall
conform to the requirements of NFPA 82.
601.2 Air movement in egress elements.
Exit access corridors shall not serve as supply, return, exhaust, relief or ventilation air ducts.
Exceptions:
1. Use of a corridor as a source of makeup air for exhaust systems in rooms that open
directly onto such corridors, including toilet rooms, bathrooms, dressing rooms, smoking
lounges and janitor closets, shall be permitted, provided that each such corridor is directly
supplied with outdoor air at a rate greater than the rate of makeup air taken from the
corridor.
2. Where located within a dwelling unit, the use of corridors for conveying return air shall
not be prohibited.
3. Where located within tenant spaces of 1,000 square feet (93 m 2) or less in area,
utilization of corridors for conveying return air is permitted.
601.2.1 Corridor ceiling.
Use of the space between the corridor ceiling and the floor or roof structure above as a return air
plenum is permitted for one or more of the following conditions:
1. The corridor is not required to be of fire-resistance-rated construction;
2. The corridor is separated from the plenum by fire-resistance-rated construction;
3. The air-handling system serving the corridor is shut down upon activation of the air-
handling unit smoke detectors required by this code;
4. The air-handling system serving the corridor is shut down upon detection of sprinkler
waterflow where the building is equipped throughout with an automatic sprinkler system; or
5. The space between the corridor ceiling and the floor or roof structure above the corridor
is used as a component of an approved engineered smoke control system.
601.3 Contamination prevention.
Exhaust ducts under positive pressure, chimneys, and vents shall not extend into or pass through ducts
or plenums.
