Dear ywca Friends & Supporters:
It was indeed an honor to be recognized by the St. Petersburg Chamber as the "Charitable Not for Profit
Organization of the Year!" ywca staff and volunteer Board members are very proud of the work done
in the community and all that we accomplish. Each of our six programs is a collaborative partnership, an
initiative which provides the highest quality of services, and is fiscally responsible to our donors. To be
recognized by the business community for our work in empowering women and families and the
elimination of racism was truly valuable to our collective effort.
Last year, life-changing services were provided to over 4,000 individuals from all walks oflife. Never
afraid to address tough social issues, ywca leadership worked to help homeless families, pregnant and
parenting teenagers, Hispanic immigrants, and the working poor. We provide quality childcare
countywide from five different centers and are particularly proud of our corporate relationship with
Morton Plant Hospital. Our partnership with the Girl Scouts of the Suncoast has allowed us to expand
our youth development program for girls into almost every part of the community. Working closely with
the City of Clearwater, the ywca expanded services to Hispanic immigrants, including health and
family advocacy and a Hispanic Leadership Council. The Council identifies trends and growing needs
within the community. Healthy Families Pinellas is a collaboration between eight organizations, and is
led by the Pinellas County Health Department. It remains the largest family support program of its kind
in the nation. We are grateful for ongoing support from major funders: the Juvenile Welfare Board and
United Way of Tampa Bay.
Thank you to those who have given their time, talent, and treasures to the ywca of Tampa Bay. Without
the generous support from individuals, groups, and corporations, we could not continue to provide
quality programs that make a positive difference in thousands of lives. Our volunteer Board members
have done an outstanding job introducing new supporters to the work of the ywca, many of whom
joined our Annual Campaign and gave generously to the ywca. The Foundation's Endowment
campaign has secured matching grants working toward the goal of providing long term financial security
for the ywca. Our sincerest, personal gratitude goes out to all of the ywca staff for their unparalleled
commitment and dedication to the mission.
Looking toward the future, we must embrace change and opportunity to move the legacy of the ywca
forward. With such wonderful donors, volunteers, and staff, the YWCA will continue to be a vital asset
to the community agency.
Sincerely,
Anita Treiser Bernstein

March 21. On that day in 1960, police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful
demonstration in Sharpeville, South AtTica, against the apartheid "pass laws." Proclaiming the
day in 1966, the United Nations General Assembly called on the international community to
redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination. Locally, close to 100
