BRIDGE WHICH CROiSES THE INTRACOASTAL

�liER�S, the City Commission has evaluat�d #he impact that the existing
Memorial Cause�way �ridge has on both pedes�rian, bicycle and vehicular trafiFic us9ng
Memorial Causeway to access and leave Clearwater Beach, lsland Estates and Sand
Key; and
�lVFI�R�AS, the Nlernarial Causevvay Bridge is the primary and sole evacuation
route for fihe iVorth end og Sand Key, all of Clearwater Beach and Island Estates; and
19�!'I-i�REAS, the e�umber o� vehicles per day using the causeway, w�ich ranges
from a lowr of approximately 31,400 vehicles per day to a high of 50,400 vehicles per day,
with an average of 38,000 vehicles per day in 1994; and
WHER�A�, the Memorial Causeway Bridge is one of the top 9 0 accident locations
within the City of Clearwater; and
WFi�REAS, the bridge is deficient under current design �iandards; and
lWW�REAS, a new 4 lane divided, high level fixed bridge, built •to current State
standards with safety shoulders, raised separator betwreen pedestrian and vehiculartraffic
as well as adequate sidewalk width for pedestrian and bicycle traffic will eliminate mosi of
the safety problems now associated wi#h the existing bridge; and
WHEFtEAS, the City of Clearwafier has funded a feasibiliiy study and the
preliminary design; and

1NEIER�AS, Federal funding could be made availabie through the Federal
Highovay Administration or other Federal funding sources as may be determined
apprapriate by the United States Congress; now, therefore,
BE ITi RESOi»VE� BY THE CiTY COMtV11SSION OF �'HE
CITY OF CLEARWATER! fLORIDA:
Section 1. That the repiacement of the Memorial Causeway Bridge is of the
highest priarifiy to the Ci�+ of Clearwater.
,���i�c� 2. That Federal funding available through the Federal Highway
Adrnin9strafiion or ather Federal funding sources, be reque�ted through our Congressional
Representafives.
��r.taon 3. Copies of this Resofution shall be forwarded to each of the Honorable
United Staies Senators, Robert Graham and Connie N9ack ar�d Honorable Unii�d States
Representatives, PiAichael Bilirakis and C.W. "Bill" Young requesting their assistance in
obtaining F��eral funding to re�alace the Memorial Causeway Bridge.
