RESOLUTION NO. 95 -54
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER,
FLORIDA, DECLARING JUNE 1995 AS HURRICANE
AWARENESS MONTH; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE
DATE.
Whereas, Hurricane Andrew struck the south Florida coast on August 24, 1992, and
caused over $30 billion in damages, destroyed more than 100,000 homes and left an
estimated 180,000 people homeless;
Whereas, The Tampa Bay region has been identified by the National Weather Service
as being one of the most hurricane vulnerable areas in the United States with the potential for
large scale loss of life; and,
Whereas, since June of 1979, the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council, guided by
the four county emergency management departments and the Regional. Emergency
Management Committee, has undertaken a series of planning projects aimed at the
comprehensive emergency management of the hurricane hazard confronting the Tampa Bay
region; and,
Whereas, the key to these detailed plans is the informed citizen; and
Whereas, the Hurricane! Survival Guide, funded by a public- private partnership, will
be updated and distributed region wide on June 1, 1995; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The month of June 1995 is declared as Hurricane Awareness
Month in the Tampa Bay region in order to increase public interest and understanding of the
hurricane hazard and urges local governments to similarly adopt resolutions and conduct
programs for their citizens.
Section 2. A copy of this resolution shall be transmitted to the Governor,
the Department of Community Affairs, Division of Emergency Management, and the chief
elected officials of governments in the Tampa Bay region.
