RESOLUTION NO. 95 -42
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER,
FLORIDA, URGING CONGRESS TO SUPPORT THE
ASSAULT WEAPON BAN AND REJECT ALL EFFORTS TO
WEAKEN OR REPEAL THE LAW; PROVIDING AN
EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, semi - automatic assault weapons equipped with large capacity
ammunition magazines have become the weapons of choice for juvenile gangs, drive -by
shooters and mass murderers, and over 20,000 assault weapons were traced to crimes
between 1986 and 1991; and
WHEREAS, assault weapons, originally designed for military use, are not suited
for hunting or other recreational uses and are not needed for self - defense; and
WHEREAS, President's Bush's 1989 ban on imported assault rifles led to a 45
percent reduction in the number of imported assault rifles traced to crime in 1990; and
WHEREAS, effective September 14, 1994, Congress stopped the importation and
domestic manufacture of assault weapons and ammunition clips holding more than 10
rounds and will reduce the firepower of criminals and the number of crimes committed
with assault weapons; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE
CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The City Commission urges Congress to support the assault weapon
ban and reject all efforts to weaken or repeal the law.
