A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF CLEARWATER, FLORIDA,
SUPPORTING A CENTRAL FIRE AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT
TRAINING INSTITUTE TO BE DEVELOPED BY THE PINELLAS
COUNTY GOVERNMENT AND THE PINELLAS COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD;
PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE.
WHEREAS, the Tampa Bay Region has been identified by the National Weather
Service as being one of the most hurricane - vulnerable areas in the United States;
and
WHEREAS, Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida in 1992 and resulted in $20
billion in property damage, left 250,000 homeless and killed 52 Florida
residents; and
WHEREAS, each year fire in the United States strikes 70,000 homes resulting
in numerous deaths, injuries and property damage estimates in excess of $11
billion; and
WHEREAS, training, planning and prevention are the best and most cost -
efficient methods to reduce the loss of life and property from fire and other
emergencies, including hurricanes; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF
CLEARWATER, FLORIDA:
Section 1. The City Commission supports the need for a central fire and
emergency training institute to be located in Pinellas County for the purpose of
the improved training of fire chiefs, firefighters and other disciplines, to
better manage the response to and the management of fires, hurricanes and other
natural or man -made disaster in our cities and county.
Section 2. A copy of this resolution shall be forwarded to the Pinellas
County Fire Protection Authority.
Section 3. This resolution shall take effect immediately upon adoption.
