BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING

#1 Call to Order – The Chair called the meeting to order at 8 a.m. at Municipal Services Building Parks & Recreation Conference Room.
To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order.
#2 Welcome New Member – Ms. Dagmar Ortiz – Ms. Ortiz lives in the South Greenwood area and had participated in a community input meeting for the new Ross Norton Recreation Complex.
Members welcomed her to the committee.
#3 Overview of Adopt-a-Park Program Ms. Millie McFadden, Parks Maintenance Coordinator. Ms. Miller explained the procedure for adopting a park for plantings and maintenance and handed
out sample contracts to members. She encouraged business and homeowner associations to participate and reminded members that any organization participating in the program must have
liability insurance. Staff will send members a list of homeowner associations currently participating.
#4 Approval of Minutes of June 5, 2002 – It was moved and duly seconded to approve the minutes as submitted to each member. The motion carried unanimously.
#5 Correspondence – Members received copy of the letter Ms. Foote wrote to Mayor Aungst regarding interest in an annual advisory board recognition dinner.
#6 Old Business
Status of Capital Improvement Projects – Mr. Chin described CIP status as follows:
Community Sports Complex – Construction to begin late this year. Carpenter Field is approximate location of stadium; Home Depot is approximate location of parking lot.
Skate Park – Depends on talks between City and Dr. Kuttler on whether City can acquire site.
East/West Train – Cliff Stephens section – Under construction.
Park Amenities – Under way.
City-wide P&R Master Plan – Completed; passed by Commission. Staff will send copies to committee members.
Tennis Court Resurfacing – Projects for FY 2001-02 completed; 2002-03 to include Bay Park at Sand Key, CBRC, Forest Run, and Ed Wright Park.
McKay Park – Project on hold; awaiting critical path schedule.
Long Center – Project under way.
Allen’s Creek Park (Maple Swamp) – Under construction; completion scheduled for September.
Ruth Eckerd Hall – Construction of Education center under way. Completion expected next summer.
North Greenwood Recreation & Aquatic Complex – Completion expected in November. Negotiations continue to purchase last lot on block.
Glen Oaks Golf Course Improvements – Course probably will be replaced by retention area; could become passive park with soccer fields. Mr. Chin will show drawings at the September 4
meeting.
Ross Norton Complex – Community members will be selected to be part of new center design team.
Fencing Replacement Program, Light Repair and Replacement – All under way as part of regular maintenance program.
Dog Park – Old playground equipment torn down; drawing of proposed park layout shown to members.
b) Beautification Awards – It was decided to establish written criteria before selecting any more winners. At the September meeting, Mr. Chin will show members samples of acceptable
and unacceptable properties. He handed out copies of Landscape Tree Protection and Standards. Staff will send members samples of criteria used in St. Petersburg as well as lists of undesirable
plants. It may take more than one meeting to establish guidelines. Ms. Curry was thanked for her efforts in photographing nominees.
#7 Adjournment – The meeting adjourned at 10 a.m.
The next meeting will be September 4 at MSB.
