BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING
CITY OF CLEARWATER
June 5, 2002

#1 Call to Order – The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. at Municipal Services Building Parks & Recreation Conference Room.
To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order.
#2 Overview of Parks and Beautification Division by Mr. Larry Dowd, Assistant Director, Parks and Recreation. Mr. Dowd explained the organizational structure of the division, which
is comprised of 105.4 full time equivalent employee positions. Paid contractors also are utilized . PBI is charged with maintenance of department facilities as well as other City facilities.
#3 Goodbye to Ms. Jean Stuart – Members thanked Ms. Stuart for her service to the committee and her many years of service on other City boards and committees. They wished her well
in her retirement. She responded it had been her pleasure to be of service.
#4 Approval of Minutes of May 1, 2002 – Member France moved to approve the minutes as written and submitted to each member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously.

#6 Old Business
Status of Capital Improvement Projects – Mr. Chin pointed out some projects on the CIP list:
McKay Park – North Beach is currently awaiting the critical path schedule for improvements to begin.
Allen’s Creek Park – Design of playground under way and construction starts this summer.
Glen Oaks Golf Course Improvements – Project may be on hold as retention pond is being developed.
Ross Norton Complex – Negotiating consultant’s contract. Survey of citizen input has been completed.
Dog Park – Design work beginning; completion expected by September.
Beautification Awards – List of nominees was corrected to read as follows: Office of Dr. John Krueger, 1615 Rainbow Dr.; Fairfield Inn, northwest corner Gulf-to-Bay and McMullen Booth
Road; Driven Image,
upscale rental car facility at northwest corner Gulf-to-Bay and U.S. 19; World Bank at Sunset Point Road and U.S. 19; Cigar Central at Fort Harrison and Druid Road.
Added to the list were Classic Car on Cleveland Street, Perkins on southwest side of Curlew Road; 615 Turner Street, a former home now a law firm, and a second house next door that
has been improved; and the law firm of Johnson, Blakely. Members will visit the sites and view pictures next meeting. Members were asked to call staff with addresses so sites can be
researched by Mr. Chin before the committee considers each nominee.
c) Response to Letter from Mayor Aungst – Regarding attendance at the annual advisory board dinner, member comments included: it is a privilege to serve therefore dinner not necessary;
money could be better spent; inconvenient time of year; in past years, program was more interesting and entertaining. Members also commented the quality of food at Harborview Center
has declined in recent months. Chair Foote will draft the response letter.
#7 New Business
Cooper’s Point – Responding to a request meet at Cooper’s Point, Mr. Chin suggested waiting until cooler weather.
July Meeting – Members decided not to meet July 3 because of the July 4th holiday.
Not on the Agenda –
Member Dadetto shared an article in the Tampa Tribune about Tampa residents asking for stiffer fines for property owners who chop down protected trees. Staff will find out the City
of Clearwater's policy and fines.
Chair Foote said she would approach organizations to urge support for creating a fund-raiser for beautification similar to a function annually held in Tampa.
#7 Adjournment – The meeting adjourned at 10 a.m.
The next meeting will be August 7 when Ms. Millie McFadden, coordinator of Projects & Contract Team, will speak about “Adopt-a-Park.”
