BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING
CITY OF CLEARWATER

#1 Call to Order – The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. at Municipal Services Building Parks & Recreation Conference Room.
To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order.
#2 Overview of Parks and Beautification Division by Mr. Larry Dowd, Assistant Director, Parks and Recreation. Mr. Dowd was unable to attend because of an unexpected business commitment.
#3 Approval of Minutes of April 3, 2002 – Member France moved to approve the minutes as written and submitted to each member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously.
#4 Correspondence – A letter was received from Mayor Aungst asking for suggestions to improve attendance at the annual Advisory Board Dinner. Members decided to discuss and make recommendations
at the June 5 meeting.
#5 Old Business
a) Status of Capital Improvement Projects – Mr. Chin noted no significant changes in the list.
Beautification Awards – The office of Dr. Paolillo will receive a Beautification Award at the May 16 City Commission meeting. Ms. Foote complimented Ms. Melanie Cornwell and Ms. Curry
for the attractive photos and display at the last presentation and said the recipient was pleased to be given the display as well as the award.
#6 New Business
It was suggested the City look into purchasing property at Grove Street near the new condominiums. Mr. Chin said the city looks for 6 to 8 acres for parkland.
In response to a question, Mr. Chin said the City is investigating purchasing a motel near Crest Lake Park.
A citizen interested in having a shelter installed at Phillip Jones Field was directed to contact Mr. Art Kader, Assistant Director.
Mr. Chin reported that 56 people attended a citizens meeting at Ross Norton Recreation Center and provided significant input toward the design and construction of the new recreation
center.
Ms. Foote asked if flags awarded to the city for its Tree City USA designation are being flown. Staff will investigate.
Ms. Foote announced the following: an article appeared April 7 in the St. Petersburg Times regarding the proposed master plan; a brochure is available on gardening events, workshops,
and classes at Pinellas County Extension Service; Xeriscape University 2002 will take place May 18 at Pinellas Technical Education Centers; and City of Tampa Mayor’s Beautification fund-raiser
is Friday, May 3.
#7 Adjournment – The business meeting adjourned at 9:15 a.m. after which members toured the North Greenwood Recreation and Aquatics Complex currently under construction. Before members
left for the tour, Mr. Chin presented an overview of the project and displayed landscape drawings.
