The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:00 a.m. at the Municipal Services Building.
To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order.
2. Location of New Library – Dr. Arlita Hallam discussed and submitted handouts of “A Master Plan for Clearwater’s Public Libraries: Where We’ve Been, Where We Are, Where We’re Going,”
which included a history of the library and its branches, and pros and cons of six potential sites for a new library. She also gave members copies of a Clearwater Main Library Costs
Decision Matrix of site and size alternatives.
3. Approval of Minutes of May 5, 1999
Member Brown moved to approve the minutes as recorded and submitted in written summation to each board member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously.
4. Correspondence - Chair Blakemore read a letter from Lisa Perkins nominating SWAT Exterminating property at 300 Saturn Ave. S. for a Beautification Award. Member Brown moved to so
recognize the business and the motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously.
Chair Blakemore said correspondence had been received from member Robert Sudalnik who submitted his resignation as of May 26, 1999, citing increasing business responsibilities.
5. Old Business
Status of County Ordinance Pertaining to Arts in Public Places
It was noted Ms. Walbolt is in contact with the Arts Council and will report any progress made toward developing the ordinance.
Status of Gulf-to-Bay Beautification Plan
Mr. Baier, Mr. Quillen, Mr. Bahnick and Mr. Guercia showed artists’ renderings and reported on progress in beautifying Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard, the Memorial Causeway and Roundabout, and
on constructing a 4-story parking garage at Clearwater Beach.
Update on Bayside Bridge Property - None
Staff Reports
It was noted that several local newspapers published the press release regarding the committee’s presentation of Beautification Awards. Members commended Birgitt Dowd, Public Information
Specialist, for her efforts in contacting the media.
7. New Business
Chair Blakemore reviewed an article from the St. Petersburg Times which stated applications are being sought for participation in the county’s millennium celebration. Chair Blakemore
suggested the Committee consider beautification events that could be held in Clearwater.
Comments From Members
Member Hider requested an update on mangrove trimming on Memorial Causeway.
