03/03/1999BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING CITY OF CLEARWATER March 3, 1999 Present: Marcia Blakemore Chair Stephen Brown Committee Member Jean Stuart Committee Member Candace Hider Committee Member Brooks Hammac Committee Member (arrived 8:05) Absent: Delphine Pullar Committee Member Robert Sudalnik Committee Member Also Present: Art Kader Parks & Recreation Department Director Mark Roether Nursery Superintendent Bobbie Downs Staff Assistant II The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:03 a.m. at the Municipal Services Building. To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order. ITEM #2 - Update: Mangroves, Upkeep and Possible Trimming Tom Miller, Assistant Director of Engineering PD&E, explained the possibility of trimming mangroves on Memorial Causeway at oblique angles to allow visibility of the water on the south and obstruct the sight of traffic to residents living to the north. He said the plan should be completed in a few weeks at which time he will return to the Committee for its consideration and input. ITEM #3 - Approval of Minutes Member Stuart moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of February 3, 1999, as recorded and submitted in written summation to each board member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. ITEM #4 - Introduction of New Members Ms. Candace Hider and Mr. Brooks Hammac were introduced as new committee members. Their terms last from March 1, 1999, to February 28, 2003. ITEM #5 - Correspondence - None ITEM #6 - Old Business a) Beautification Awards Program AND b) Discussion and Vote on Freedom Park Chair Marcia Blakemore explained the purpose of the program to new members and encouraged all committee members to bring nominations to meetings. Member Hammac moved to recognize Freedom Park with a beautification award. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously with member Hider abstaining. Members suggested sending out press releases announcing award winners. c) Discussion of Mangroves Letter Member Brown moved to delay sending a letter supporting trimming mangroves to City Commission until members hear Mr. Miller’s completed proposal. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. d) Report on South Ft. Harrison Repaving Nursery Superintendent Mark Roether said Florida Department of Transportation will report on the status of repaving and restriping within the next two months. ITEM #7 - Staff Reports Mr. Roether said Lake Chautauqua Park will be open to the public March 15, and a grand opening ceremony will be held April 17. Other projects under way include landscaping at Eddie C. Moore West, Fun ‘n Sun in April, and landscaping medians on Gulf-to-Bay Boulevard. ITEM #8 - New Business a) City Beautification Signs Mr. Roether said he had removed the sign in question from the Welcome Center. ITEM #7 - Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 9:34 a.m.
