02/03/1999BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING CITY OF CLEARWATER February 3, 1999 Present: Marcia Blakemore Chair Stephen Brown Committee Member Jean Stuart Committee Member Delphine Pullar Committee Member Vacant seats (2) Committee Members Absent: Robert Sudalnik Committee Member Also Present: Art Kader Parks & Recreation Department Director Mark Roether Nursery Superintendent Bobbie Downs Staff Assistant II The Chair called the meeting to order at 8:05 a.m. at the Municipal Services Building. To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order. ITEM #2 - Approval of Minutes Member Brown moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of November 4, 1998, as recorded and submitted in written summation to each board member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. Member Brown also moved to approve the minutes of the regular meeting of December 2, 1998, as recorded and submitted in written summation to each board member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. Due to a lack of quorum January 6, 1999, a meeting was not held. ITEM #3 - Correspondence - None ITEM #4 - Old Business a) Landscaping Plan for the Roundabout Nursery Superintendent Mark Roether showed drawings and renderings of the proposed landscaping plan for the approach to Clearwater beach and the roundabout traffic system. The presentation included proposed amenities and plants/trees/shrubbery and blueprints of elements such as drinking fountains, information kiosk, irrigation plan, etc. Logo theme throughout is the Welk shell. b) Beautification Awards Program Member Pullar moved to present an award to Pat Lokey’s downtown business. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. In response to a question, Parks & Recreation Department Director Art Kader said he would ask Public Information Specialist Birgitt Dowd to create a display at MSB of Beautification Awards winners. Members agreed to bring suggestions for future award winners to the next meeting. c) Discussion of Mangrove Letter to City Commissioner Members decided to postpone composing a letter supporting trimming mangroves at the Memorial Causeway until they heard a presentation by Tom Miller, Assistant Director of Engineering PD&E. Mr. Kader said he would invite Mr. Miller to speak at the March meeting. d) Update on Prospective Committee Members Mr. Kader said the City Commission has asked for more candidates before filling the two vacant positions on the committee. He said signs advertising the vacancies are posted at MSB and recreation centers. ITEM #5 - Staff Reports Mr. Roether noted some small projects are under way such as adding trees on Countryside Boulevard, finishing development of Lake Chautauqua Park in preparation for a March opening, and adding vegetation and mulch to the bike trail at Eddie C. Moore West Complex. ITEM #6 - New Business It was noted the pavement along South Ft. Harrison Avenue is in poor shape. Mr. Kader will report on Department of Transportation (DOT) repaving plans. ITEM #7 - Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 9:10 a.m.
