To Whom It May Concern:
For the past seventeen years, Florida West Ballet has received various small donations
annually from area corporations and private donations. These funds are designated to our
general fund.
In addition, our parents volunteer over 3000 hours at a concession stand at the Ice Palace
annually. They have been doing this for the past five consecutive years and have signed
a contract for next season.
Each year in November, our Board of Directors holds our successful and popular
"Nutcracker Tea," which raises over thirty five percent of our annual budget.
The matching funds for this grant application will come from the Florida West Ballet
general funds. Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
/l~d.~

Florida West Ballet was founded in Pinellas County over
15 years ago to provide scholarship training and
performing opportunities for talented classical ballet students
ages 12-18. Dancers are chosen at an annual audition and placed in two levels:
Apprentice and Company. There are currently 20 dancers from five different
counties in the Tampa Bay area in Florida West Ballet.
Under the artistic direction of internationally acclaimed Robert de Warren (also the Artistic
Director of Sarasota Ballet) and a faculty from Sarasota Ballet for the past two years, the
company trains and rehearses twice a week for a minimum of 8-10 hours. (Additional
training is required of the dancers at their home dance schools and studios.) Dancers from
Florida West Ballet are accepted each summer into the most prestigious ballet institutions
and programs in the country. (See Dancer Acceptance List.) Two of our dancers have received
the Ruth Eckerd Hall Performing Arts Scholarship; Ashley Dick is the current recipient.
Each season in Florida West Ballet provides challenging training, increased performing
opportunities and a high level of professionalism. This season Florida West Ballet premiered
its innovative new program, Bagels and Ballet. Two different mixed programs were performed
(free and open to the public) in November and January at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Bagels were
served in the lobby. Plans are under way to expand Bagels and Ballet for next year.
Tonight's premiere of Coppelia is Florida West Ballet's first full-length ballet production.
Other firsts for the company: Stacy Keller, a Florida West Ballet alumna and currently a
member of Sarasota Ballet, returns as a guest artist to dance the lead role of Swanildaf
Coppelia. And thirteen young dancers from area ballet schools (chosen at an audition in
April) are appearing as
dolls, toys and young
villagers in tonight's
performance.
For more information
about the audition for the
1997- 1998 season or any
other information, please

In two short seasons, Robert de Warren has
transformed Florida West Ballet by providing
a greatly expanded and enhanced
curriculum, a top-notch faculty from
Sarasota Ballet, additional performing
opportunities and a high degree of
professionalism. His leadership has guided
Florida West to the level for which it has
been striving for 15 years.
Mr. de Warren came to Florida West Ballet
and Sarasota Ballet directly from La Scala,
Milan, Italy where he was director of ballet
for seven years, a position for which he was
recommended by Rudolf Nureyev. He was
also the artistic supervisor of its 175-year-
old ballet school, where he worked with
dance students from childhood to the post-graduate level.
Before that, de Warren spent eleven years as head of the National Ballet of Iran under the
patronage of Empress Farah. When he returned to England, he became the artistic director
of the Northern Ballet Theatre which he built into one of the major ballet companies in
Britain.
An honors graduate of Great Britain's Royal Ballet School, de Warren danced with the Royal
Ballet and later was principal dancer with the Stuttgart Ballet, performing leading roles for
the great choreographer John Cranko. Mr. de Warren has worked with all the great names in

Coppelia Synopsis
Act I
Old Coppelius, a puppet maker, has constructed a mechanical doll, Coppelia, so life-like that
everybody imagines it to be real. One morning, Swanilda sees the doll reading and invites her to
join in a dance, but gets no response. Coppelius is amused. Franz, Swanilda's betrothed also
sees the beautiful girl and is rewarded by a kiss she blows him. Dr. Coppelius is happy at the
interest his creation is causing. Villagers arrive and soon join in a lively dance, the Mazurka. Franz
is challenged by one of the pretty girls, much to Swanilda's annoyance.
The Lord of the Manor announces the couple's marriage, but teases them with the "ear of corn"
trick: if one hears it rattle, it is true love, if there
is no sound, no love. Swanilda swears Franz
does not love her. Mysterious noises are ex-
plained as Coppelius' experiments in trying to
create more mechanical dolls and the villagers
continue in their happy dances.
Swanilda and her friends find the key to
Coppelius' house and enter secretively, curious
as to what is inside. Franz has other intentions;
he wants to meet the girl that blew him a kiss!
INTERMISSION
10
Act II
The friends discover the mysterious workshop where Dr. Coppelius carries out his experiments.
They are surprised by the owner and flee in fear. Swanilda hides behind a curtain where the doll
Coppelia is. Franz arrives searching for the pretty girl, but is caught by Coppelius who drugs him
and commences an experiment through which he hopes to transfer Franz's spirit to the doll.
Swanilda has changed into the doll's clothes and follows each step of the procedure convincing
Coppelius that she is the doll and becomes alive. The truth is discovered and all flee in fear.
INTERMISSION
Act II'
The Festival of the Flowers takes place in a beautiful garden. The Lord of the Manor crowns
Swanilda as its queen and also joins Franz and her in marriage. The villagers and friends dance
in celebration. When Dr. Coppelius interrupts the festivities complaining of the damage done to
him, a collection is made which restores his good humor. The festival then ends on a happy
note.
