SEP 12 200 PLANNING DEPARTMENT CITY OF CLEARWATER Dear Jeff, We completed a site visit to the Clearwater Ruby Tuesday's on August 29, 2007. As per your request, we were to evaluate all the trees that were four (4 ") inches in DBH or greater. The Ruby Tuesday's site contained 74 trees that were four inches or greater in diameter. The site contained four species of trees, live oak, laurel oak, red maple, and cabbage palm. However, only 62 trees are identified on the survey that InterPlan provided. See Figure 1 for the approximate location of the missing trees. All 74 trees are listed in Table one along with the status of their health. I also found that our DBH measurements were different than the ones found on the Landscape Plan Sheet. In many cases it was only an inch, but approximately half all hardwood tree measurements differed by two or more inches. Table one contains the DBH measurements. Overall, there are only three trees that are scheduled for retention that are not in the best condition. Trees 37, 38 & 39 are alive and generally healthy but they have resprouted from a downed live oak, photos 1 & 2. There is some decay on these trees so we are recommending that they be removed. In addition, there are a few trees scheduled for retention that are leaning (trees 18, 40, 41,42, 45, 46, 48, 57, 58, & 63). Their leaning is not due to any root upheaval but from competition for sunlight with neighboring trees. None of the trees that are leaning are in jeopardy of falling on their own in the near future, barring a storm event with extremely strong winds. Our advice is to reassess their role in your landscape plan and advise your client that they ♦ Ecosystems ♦ Protected Species 1 Native Plant Landscape Design ♦ Tree Appraisals ♦ Wetland Delineation should be inspected every one or two years for any signs of decline. The leaning trees are noted in Table 1. Above, we note that tree 63 is leaning. This tree is connected to tree 64 at the base. These two large trunks were cabled together several years ago (an assumption since we do not know how long ago it occurred) to aid in their stability, photo 3. Although we did not climb the tree to physically inspect the cabling, the cabling system seems to be in good working order. Again, we advise you to notify your client and have this tree inspected annually. Native Florida Landgeapeg also reviewed the health and status of the landscaping beds. Throughout the site, most of the landscape beds have been over grown with weeds and vines. And, in a few places, there are invasive plants that have recruited in. In particular, Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius), camphor tree (Cinnamomea camphora) and carrotwood (Cupaniopsis anacardioides) have begun to seed in. The large landscape bed at the back (north side of site) has St. Augustine grass that has gotten out of control and also has had an invasion of the exotic guineagrass (Panicum maximum). The landscape material on site is made up of yellow anise (Illicium parviflora), dwarf crape myrtle (Lagerstroemia sp.), fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum), mondo grass (Ophiopogon japonica), Ligustrum ( Ligustrum licidum), philodendron (Selloum sp.) and dwarf yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) of the Ms. Schillers Delight variety. Of all these landscape species, the ligustrum and Ms. Schillers are in the best shape. The landscape bed that is in the best health is on the east side of the site, adjacent to Crabby Joe's. Feel free to contact me about any of our findings.
