March 12,2013 Preface Soif sunreys contain information that affects land use pianning in suroey areas. They highlight soil limitations that affect various land uses and provide infarmation about the properties af the soils in the survey areas.Soil sunreys are designed for many different users, including farmers, ranchers, foresters, agronomists, urban planners, community officials, engineefs, devebpers, builders, and hame buyers. Also, conservationists, teachers, students, and specialists in recrea#ion, waste disposal, and pollufion cantrol can use the surveys to help them understand, protect,or enharsce the environment. Various land use regulations of Federal,Sta#e,and local governments may impose special resirictios an land use or land treatment Soil surveys identify soit properties that are used in making various land use or land treatment decisians. The infarmation is intended to help the land users identfy and reduce the effects of sail limitations on various land uses. The landowner or user is responsible for identifying and eomplying with existing laws artd regulations. Although soil survey information can be used far general farm, locel, and widearea planning, nnsite investigation is needed ta supplement this information isome cases. Examples include soil quality assessments(http:l/so'sts.usda.gav/sqi/}and cetain conservation and engineeting applications. For mwe detailsd information, contact your local USDA Service Center(http:/Iaffces.sc.egov.usda.gov/Eocator/app? agency=nres)or your NRCS Staie Sail Scientist(http://soils.usda.govlcontacU state affices!). Great differences in soil properties can occur within short distances. Some saits are seasonally we#or subject to flooding. Some are too unstable to be used as a foundation for buildings or roads.Ctayey or wet soils are poorly suited ta use as septic tank absotption fields.A high vvater table makes a soil pqqdy suited to basements or undergraund installations. The National Cooperative Soil Survey is a joint effort of the United States Department of Agriculture and otherederal agencies,State agecies including the Agicultural Experiment Stations, and local agencies. The Natural Resources Conservatian Service(NRCS)has leadership for the Federal pat nf the National Cooperative Soil Survey. Information about soils is updated periodically.Updated information is availabte through the NRCS Soil Data Mart Web site or the NRCS Web Soil Survey. The Soil Data Mart is the data storage site for the official soil survey information. Gurrently, soiis are mapped accarding to the boundaries of majar land resaurce areas (MLRAs).MLRAs are geographically assQCiated Iand resource units that share common characteristics related ta physiography, gsology, climate, water resaurces, soils, biological resaurces, and land uses(USQA,2006}Saii survey areas typiaally consist of parts of one or mare MIRA. The soils and miscellaneous ereas in a survey area occur in an orderly pattern that is related to the gealogy, landforms, relief, climate, and natural vegetatian of the area. Each kind of soit and miscelfaneous aea is associated with a particular kind af iandfarm or wsth a segmeni af the landfom.By abserving the soils ard miscellaneous areas in the survey area and relating thair pasiEion to specific segments af the landtorm,a soil scintist develops a concept,or modsl,of how ti7ey weta formed. Thus, during mapping, this model enables the soil scientist to predict with s considerable degree of accuracy the kind of soil ar miscellaneous area at a speeific location an the landscape. Cammanly, individual soils on the fandscaps merge into one another as their characferistics gradualty change. To construct an accurate soii map, however, soil scientists must determine the boundaries between the soils.l'hey can observe only a limited number of soil profiles.Nevertheless, these observatians, supptemented by an understanding of the soiF-vegetation-landscape relationship, are sufficient to verify predictions of the kinds of soil in an area and ta determine the baundaries. Sail scientists recorded the characteristics af the soit profiles thet they stuciied. They noted sai}colar, texture, size and shape af soil aggrsgates, kind and amourst nf rock fragments, distributian of plant roats, reacEion, and other features fhat enable them ta identify soils. After describing the soils in the survey area and determining their praperties, the soil scientists assigned the soits to taxonttmic classes(units). Taxonamic cEasses are cancepts. Each taxonomic class has a set of soil characteristics with preeise{y defined limits.Thclasses are used as a basis for comparisata classify soifs systematically.Soil taxonomy, the sys#em of taxonomic classificaCian used irihe United States,is based mainly an the kind and character o# soil praperties and the arrangement of horizons wiihin the proEile. After the sail scientists classified and named the soils in the survey area, they campaed the 5 CusGom Soil Resource Report individual soils with similar sails in the same taxanamic class in other areas sa that they could confirm data and assemble additional ciata based on experience and research. The abjective of soil mappig is not to delineate pure map unit components;the abjective is to separate the fandscape into landforms or ladform segments that have similar use and management requirements. Each map unit is defined by a uniqus combinatiaof soil eompanents andlor miscellaneous areas in predictable prapartians. Some camponents may be highfy contrasting to the other components of the map unit. The presence of minor companents in a map unit in na way diminishes the usefu{ness or accuracy of the data. The delineation of such landforms and landform segments on the map provides sufficient information for the develapment of resource plans.!f intensive use of small areas is planned, ansite investigation is needed to define and locate the soils and miscellaneous areas. Soil scientists make many field obserrations in the process of producing a soil map. The frequency of observation is dependent upon several factors, including scale of mapping, intensity of mapping, design of map units, complexity of the landscape, and experience of the soil scientist.Obsenrations are mada to test and refins the soil- landscape modeE and predictions and to verify the classificatian ot the soils at specific locations.Once khe soil-landscape model is refined,a significantfy smaller number of measurements af individual snil properties are made and recorded. These messurements may include field measurements, such as those far color, depth to bedrack, and texture, and laboratory measurements, such as thasa for content of sand, sift, clay, salt, and other components.Properties af each sqi)typically vary from one point to another across the landscape. Obseroations for map unit compvnents are aggregated to develap ranges of characteristics for the components. The aggregated values are presented. Direct measurements do not exist for every property presented for every map unit componsnt.Values for some properties are estimated from combinations of other properties. Whi{e a soii survey is in progress, samples af some of the soils in the area generally are callected for laboratnry analyses and far engineering tests.Sail scisntists interpret the data from these analyses and tests as well as the fisld-observed characteristics and the sail properties to detemine Ehe expected behavior o#the soils under different uses.Interpretations for all of the soils are field tested through observation of the soils in different uses and under different levels of management. Some interpretations are madified tot lacal canditfans, and some new interpretations are developed to ineet loca)needs. Data are assembled from other sources, such as rssearch information, production records, and field experience of specialists.Far example, data an crop yields under defined[evels of management are assembled irom farm records and from field or plat experiments on the same kinds of soil. Predlctions about soil behaviar are based not only on soii properties bu#also on such variables as ciimate and biolagical activity.Soil canditions are predictable over IQng periods af time, but they are not predictabfe from year to year. For example, soil scientists ean predicf with a fairly high degree of accuracy that a given soil wiil have a high water table within certain depths in mast years,But they cannat predict that a high water table will afways be at a specific level in the soii on a specific date, After soil scientists located and identified the significant natural bodies of soil in the sun+ey area, they drew the baundaries af these bodies on aerial photographs and identified each as a specific map unit.Aerial photpgraphs show trees, buildings, fie(ds, roads, and rivers, all of which help in iocating boundaries accuately. 8 Soil Mp The sail map sentian inciudes the soi{map#ar the defined area of interest,a list nf saii map units on the map and extent of each map unit, and cartographic symbols displayed an the map. Also presented are various metadata about data used to produce the map,and a descriptinn af each soil map unit. 7 Custom Sail Resource Report Soil Map O Y N 3Y2890 32292 32255G ;322UBG 3«7^7t 323d0 3230?0 32310b 323t3Ci YT'S@ 28' .,.. ..,. ,.;;- ... . ,,,,. 2T 56 28 _ • ' '; s- v,'., k t, , g `. A map unit delineation on a soi)map represents an arQe dorninated by one ar more major kinds of soil or misceAaneous areas.A map unit is identifiecl and nam+ad according to the taxonamic cassifica#ion of the dominant soils.Within a taxonomic class there are precisely de#ined limits far the prapeties of the sails. On the landscape, hawever, the soils are natural phenomena, and they have tha characteistic variability af ali natural phenomena. Thus, the range of some observed praperties may extend beyond the limits defined far a taxonomic class.Areas of soils of a single taxonomic class rare{y,it ever, can be mapped without including areas af oiher taxanamic classes.Cansequetly, evary map ur►it is made up of the so'sls or miscelianeous areas #ar whicfi it is named and some miar camponents thaf belong to taxonomic Gasses other than those of ths majar soils. Most minor soils have praperties similar to those of the dominant soil ar sails in khe map unit, and thus they do not affect use and manageme#.These are called noncontrasting,or similar, camponents. They may or may nat be mentioned in a particutar map unit description.Other minor components, however, have properties and behavioral chatacferistics divergent enough to affect use or to require different management. These are called conErasting,ar dissimilar, companents. They generally are in smail areas and could not be mapped separately because of tha scale used. Some sma11 areas of sttogly contrasting soiis or miscellaneous areas are identified by a special symbok on the maps.If included in the database for a given area, the contrasting rrinar components are identified in the map unit descriptions along with some characteristics of each.A few areas o€minot companertts may noi have bee obsetved, and catsequen#fy they are not mentioned in the descriptians, especially where the pattern was so complex that itwas impracticat ta make enaugh observations to identify all the soiis and miscellaneous areas on the landscape. The presence af minor camponents in a map unit in no way diminishes the usefutness oc accuracy af the data. The abjective of mapping is not t4 defireate pure taxonomic ciasses but rather to ssparate the landscape inia landforms or landform segments that have similar use anci management requirements. The delinetian nf such segments on the map provides sufficient information for the developmsnt of resource plans. If intensive uss of smati areas is planned,I10W@VEf,onsite investigation is needed to define and locate the soils and miscellaneous areas. 1Q Custom Soil Resource Report An identifying symbo!precedes the ritap unii name in themap unit descriptians. Each description includes generat#acts about the unit and gives important soil papeties and qualities. Soils that have proifes that are almost alike make up a sar'I series.Except for diffeences in tecture of the surface(ayer, all the soils of a series have major horizons that are similar in cornpasition, thickness, and arrangement. Soifs of one series can differ in kexture of the surface layer, slope, stoniness, salinity, degree of erosion, and ather chracterisfics#hat affect their use.On the basis af such differences,a sai)series is divided into sait phases. Most of the areas shown on the rtetailed soil maps are phases of soil series. The name of a sail phase commanly indicates a feature that afFects use or management. Fnr example,Alpha silt loam,0 to 2 percent slpes, is a phase o#the Alpha senes. Same rnap units are made up af two or more major soils or misceqaneous areas. These map units are complexes, associatians,or undifferentiated grnups. A complex consists of twu or more soils or miscellaneous areas in such an inticate pattern ar in such small areas that they cannot be showtn separate#y an the maps. The pattern and proportion of the soils or misceltaneous areas are somewhat simiiar in all areas,A1pha-Beta complex,0 to 6 percent slapes,is an exarrtple. An associatian'rs made up oP two or more geographically associated snifs ar miscellansos areas that are shown as one unit on the maps.Secause af present or antieipated uses oP the map units in the survey area, itwas no#considered praciical ar necessary ta map the soils or miscellaneous areas sepaately.Tte pattrn and relative propation of the soits or miscellaneous areas are somewhat similar.A1pha- Beta association,0 to 2 perGent slopes,is an example. An undifferentiated group is made up of two or mare soils or misceilaneous areas#hat couid be mapped individually buf are mapped as one unit because similar iterpretations can be made for use and management. The pattern and praporti+n of the soiis or miscellaneous areas in a mapped area are not uniform. An area can be made up nf ony one of the major soils or misceltaneous areas.ar it can be made up of all af them.A[pha and Beta soifs,0#0 2 percent stopes,is an example: Some surveys incfude rniscellaneous areas.Such areas have iittEe or no sail materiai and suport little or nQ vegetatian. Rock outcrop is an example. 11 Custam Soil Resource Report Pinellas County, Fforida 17-Myakka soils and Urban land Map Unit Setting Landscape:Caas#al plains Elevafion:10 fa 1 Qt1 feet Mean annvai precipitation:48 ta 56 inches Mean annuat air temperature:70 to 77 degrees F Frost free periad:335 to 3&5 days Map Unit Composition Myakka and similar saits:50 percent tirban tand:45 percent Minor components:5 percet Description of Myakka Setting Landforrrr:Flatwoods on marine terraces Landforrrr posifiai(three-diniensional):Talf Dawn-slope shape:Convex Across-slope shape,•Linear Parent material:Sandy marine depasits Properties and qualities Slope:Q to 2 percent Depth to rasCrictive feature:More than 8{l inches Drfnage ctass:Poorty drained Capacity of fhe most limiting layer to transmif water(Ksaf),Moderately high ta high (0.60 ta 6.40 inthr) Oepth to water table:About 6 to 18 inches Frequency of flooding:None Frequency of ponding:None Maximm salinity:Nonsaline(0.4 to 2.0 mmhoslcm) Sorfium adsorption ratiq rrraximum:4.0 Auaitable watereapacity:Lawr(about 4.6 inches) (nterpretive groups Farmland classifieafion:Not prime farmland Land capability(nonirrigated):4w Mydrologie Sofi Grztrp:A/D Typlcal prafile 0 to 4 inches:Fine sand to 22 inches:Fire sand 22 to 36 rnches:Fine sand 36 to 80 inches:ine sand Descriptian af Urhan Land Setting Landfom►:Marine terraees Landform positian(three-dimensional)Interfiuve,talf Down-slope shape:Linear Across-stape shape:Linear 12 Custom Sail Resource Repart Parerrt materiaL No parent materia4 Minar Components Adamsvitle Percen#of map unit:3 gercent Land(orm:Ridges on marine teraces, knoiis on marine terraces Landform position(three-dimensional):Interflue,talf Down-slope shape:Convex Across-slope shape:Linear Pomello Pe►r,ent of map unit:2 perceni E.andfomr:Ridges on marine terraces, rises vn marine teraces Land{brm position(thre-cirnensTo»aJj:1nCerffuve Down-slope shape:Gonvex Across-slope shape:Linear 29—Tavares saiis and Urban land, 0 ta 5 percent sipes Map Unit Setting Landscape:Coastal plains Etevation:10 to 120 feet Mean annua!preciprtafron;48 ta S6 iches Mean anrTUa1 air temperature:7fl to 77 degrees F rost-free period:335 to 365 days Map Unit Gnmposition Tavares and similar soils:50 percent Urban,Nand:45 percent Minoreomponerfs:5 percent Descrlption of Tavares Setting Landform:Ridges on marirte terraces, knolis an marine terraces Landform pasition(thrse-dlmensronal):Interftuus Qown-slape shape:Canvex Across-sfape shape:Linear F'arent rnaterial:Eolian or sandy marine deposits Praperties and quali#ies 51ope;0 to 5 percent Depth fo restrictive feature:More than 80 inches Qrainage class:Moderately weli dainad Gapacrfy of the rrrost tirniting layer to transmit water(Ksat):High to very high{6.0o tu 2D.00 inlhr} Depth fa water table:About 42 to 72 incnes Fequency of ftoocling:Nane Frequenay ot panding:lVane 3 Custom Soil Resourcetepor# Maximum safi»ity:htonsaline{4.0 to 2.0 mmhos/cm) Sodium adsorption rtio, maximum.4.0 AvailabJe water capacity:Very Eow{abaut 2.B inches} tnterpretive graups Farmland ctassifrcatian:Nat prime farmland land capability(nonirrigated):3s Hydrofogic Sailroup:A Typtcal profile 0 ta 5 inches:Fine sand 5 to 80 inches:Fine sand Description of Urban land Setting tandform:Marine terraces l.andform position(three-dimensional):Interfluve,Ealf Dowr-slape shape:Linear Aecoss-stope shape:Linear Parent rnaterial. No parent material Minor Components Adamsvlie Percenf nf map unit.2 percent Lan?/orm:Ridges on marine terraces, knalls omarine terraces Landform position(three-dimensinna!)Interfluve,talf Qawn-stope shape:Convex Across-slope shape;Linear Pomello Percent ot map ttnit:2 percent tanutfnrrn:Ridges qn marine terraces, rises an marine terraces Landfarm position(three-dimensional}:lnterfluve Dawn-stope shape;Convex Across-sJope shape:Linear Seffne Perent of rnap unit: 1 peresnt Landfarrn:Ridges on marire terraces, knolls on rnarine terraces Lanclform posrtion(three-dimensional):Iterfluve,talf Fown-slope shepe:Linear Across-siape shape:Linear 14 References American Association af State Highway and 7ransportatian Officials(AASHTO),ZQ04.
