08/13/2009 PENSION ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES CITY OF CLEARWATER August 13, 2009 Present: Nathan Hightower Chair Tom Jensen Vice-Chair John Schmalzbauer Committee Member John Doran Committee Member/Councilmember Paul Gibson Committee Member/Councilmember Brian De Witt Committee Member Absent: Carlen Petersen Committee Member/Councilmember Also Present: Joe Roseto Human Resources Director Patricia O. Sullivan Board Reporter The Chair called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. at City Hall. To provide continuity for research, items are in agenda order although not necessarily discussed in that order. 2 - Approval of Minutes – July 9, 2009 Member Doran moved to approve the minutes of the regular Pension Advisory Committee meeting of July 9, 2009, as submitted in written summation to each board member. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. 3 – Employees to be Heard – None. 4 – Action Items : A. Review and Action on Employee Requests for Regular Pensions: 1. John R. Diebel, Police Member Schmalzbauer moved to recommend approval of the request for a regular pension for John R. Diebel. The motion was duly seconded and carried unanimously. 5 – Pending/New Business – None. 6 – Director’s Report Human Resources Director Joe Roseto reported at the August 17, 2009 Pension Trustees meeting, the Pension Actuary and Attorney will report on adjustments that could be made to the Pension Plan. Changes would require collective bargaining and referendum approval. Pension Advisory 2009-08-13 1 Discussion ensued regarding options, with concerns expressed that the City's financial outlook is bleak and that any changes would have ramifications. Mr. Roseto said nothing that affects 175 and 185 benefits for Police and Fire would be considered. In response to a question, Mr. Roseto said staff is drafting a new process to address disability cases and will bring it to the PAC (Pension Advisory Committee) for input. 7 - Committee Members to be Heard: Members thanked John Diebel for his service to the City. 8 - Adjourn The meeting adjourned at 9:13 a.m. Attest: Chair Pension Advisory Committee Board Reporter, Pension Advisory 2009-08-13 2
