SEABOARD AIR LINE RAILROAD COMPANY
SPECIFICATIONS FOR UNDERGROUND COMMUNICATION AND POWER CABLES CIiOSSING UNDER
TRACKS AND RIGHT OF WAY
1. PURPOSE OF SPECIFICATION
(a) The purpose of this specification is to govern the location and
installation of underground electrical cables, crossing the tracks and right of
way of the Railroad so that these cable crossings will not interfere with present
or future operations and construction of the Railroad.
(b) The Railroad's signal and communication underground cable \<fill be
placed in the subgrade or shoulder of the roadbed at a max:i.mum average depth of
thirty (30) inches below the ground line of the subgrade or shoulder and at a
horizontal distance of from twelve (12) to eighteen (18) inches outside the ballast
line. This cable is installed with a cable plowing work train and cable crossings
not installed to conform to these specifications will be liable to damage.
2. GENERAL lOCATION OF UNDERGROUND CROSSING
(a) The cable or duct system of proposed underground crossings shall be
laid as straight and direct as possible between the points where the underground
line enters and leaves the property of the Railroad.
(b) Manholes, pull boxes and terminals in the underground crossing
should be located off the Railroad's right of way where practicable to do so.
3. CONSTRUCTION OF UNDERGROUND CROSSING
. (a) The top of all duct and cable system structures of underground
cable crossings shall be located at a depth of not less than forty-two (42) inches
below the ground line of the shoulder or sub grade of the roadbed, except as
specified in Paragraph (c) below.
(b) Underground crossings of conmnmication cable and power supply cables
with maximum voltage of 750 volt.s may be installed by pushing a galvanized iron
pipe under the track at depth as specified above, and to serve as a conduit,
provided such pipe extends at least eight (8) feet beyond the outside rail on each
end of the crossing and the cable is buried at least three (3) feet below the
ground line at all other points on the Railroad' 5 property.
(c) Underground crossings of pcrwer supply cable operating, at a potential
above 750 volts shall be installed at a depth of not less than four (4) feet below
the ground line of the subgrade or shoulder of the roadbed where the cable crosses
under the track, this depth to be maintained a.t least eight (8) feet from the ~t-
side of the outside rail at each end of the crossing under the tracks. At all
other points on the Railroad's p:roperty the cable shall be located at least three
0) feet below the ground line. Between the points where the underground. crossing
enters and leaves the Railroadis property the cable is to be enclosed in galvanized
iron pipe or approved concrete encased duct for mechanical protection of the cable.
.
I
I ..
-2-
Cd) Owners of the cable shall designate the location by the placing ot
lill'll or markers on each side of the track, preferably at or near the Railroad' 8
