CLEARWATER PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
FIELD TRIP
APRIL 11, 1997
9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Board Members Present: Tom Leavy, Tony Bacon, Joanne
Laurenti, Estelle Dunn, Judy Melges, Glenn Garte, William
Rafaniello. Library Director: Arlita Hallam
The Board met at the Main Library at 9:00 a.m. and rode
in the Police Crime Prevention van to the Dunedin Public
Library. Library Director Wendy Foley conducted the tour
of their new facility, which was designed by Harvard,
Jolley Architects.. The basis of funding for the library
was the $1.4 million Milliken Family grant. Other major
contributors were $85,000 from Morton Plant/Mease for the
community room and videos, $30,000 from the Dunedin
Rotary Club for the lobby, and $150,000 from the Snyder
family for the storytime room. Several $5,000 gifts
furnished computer rooms. Gemmy Brown served as chair of
the fund-raising task force and raised $450,000 from the
community. The board was impressed with the
functionality, flexibility, and cheerful openness of the
facility. It was noted that staff had been very involved
in the layout and functional design of the building.
At 11:00, the Board toured the new Tarpon Springs
Library, which was designed by Gee and Jensen. Library
Director Liz O'Brien conducted the tour. The cost of the
building was $1.76 million, with another $2.2 million
spent on related costs (landscaping, land, etc.).
$450,000 was raised from community donations. Board
members were concerned about some of the design elements,
such as hard corners, noisy flooring, low circulation
desk counters, and white floor tiles, which had been
installed upon the recommendation of the pro bono
interior designer. It was easy to see that library staff
had not been involved in the design elements. The etched
windows around the children's library and entrance, as
well as the tarpon fountain in front of the library, were
beautiful features and were major contributions.
The van returned to the Main Library,at 1:00 p.m. Policy
Committee members, Glenn Garte, Tom Leavy, Carolyn Moore,
and Arlita Hallam then met at Jimmy Hall's to review the
final draft of the library policies. The revisions will
be presented by the committee to the- Library Board on
April 18.
