The meeting was called to order by Chairlady Blidsoe at 7:40 p. m.
Minutes of meeting of April 20, 1983 reviewed and approved as sub-
mitted.
One case to be heard as follows:
Talk of the Town Restaurant - 1260 U. S. 19 South - Mr. Jack Swartz,
.~eneral Manager. Requesting 56 square foot variance to increase size
',~f existing ground sign from 264 square feet to 320 square feet.
In response to Mrs. Blidsoe's request, Mr. Williams informed the Board
that the sign has already been erected but at his request it has been
boarded over and he has advised the applicant that approval would have
to be received from this Board before the sign could be used. Further,
approximately one-half of the sign acts as roof-covering and all print-
ing or wording is on the lower portion of the sign.
Mr. Jack Swartz, General Manager of Talk of .the Town, answered questions
from Messrs. Leist and Finton regarding the tlroof" portion of the sign.
He explained that the sign actually covered up three steel pipes that
were bases or supports for a previous sign and an eyesore without this
sign cover-up. Further, to remove this section would expose the entire
frame and while this probably could be remedied, Mr. Swartz felt it would
detract from the attractiveness of the sign.
Mrs. Blidsoe remarked that the existing sign already is larger than per-
mitted by code and Mr. Finton stated that since, in his opinion there is
no evidence of hardship on the part of the applicant, approval of,the
variance could not be justified. Mr. Swartz responded to Mr. Finton's
remarks by stating that this was their only sign and their only means of
promoting their "specialsll.

Mr. Swartz was informed by the Board that he could appeal their de-
