Kennedy, Jr. R. G. Whitehead Police Chief Chamber of Commerce Ministerial Association Asst. City Attorney City Clerk In the absence of the Chairman, Joseph L. Coggan, the Board by consent named Police Chief Willis Booth as acting Chairman. Chief Booth called the meeting to order. Rev. McBride moved that the minutes of the meeting of December 3, 1964 be approved in accordance with copies submitted to each Board member in writing. Motion was seconded by Mr. Dribben and carried unanimously. o Mr. Basil Hobbs, Mrs. Amy Bravo and Mr. R. Earl Newberry were present representing the Leukemia Society. Mr. Richard Deeb was present representing ALSAC - St. Jude's Hospital. Chief Booth explained to the representatives that the purpose of the meeting was to attempt to have the two organizations conduct combined solicitation and to prevent conflict as resulted in March of 1964. Rev. McBride expanded on the remarks of Chief Booth. Mr. Richard Deeb stated that the primary object of their organization was to raise funds for St. Jude's Hospital, which does research and treats leukemia and related blood diseases. In answer to a question he stated that no patients from Pinellas County had gone to St. Jude's Hospital, but he thought four cases in Pinellas County had been helped through financial assistance by purchasing drugs, etc. Mr. Hobbs stated that Leukemia is difficult to diagnose, but at this time is always a terminal disease. He alao stated that the Leukemia Society primarily conducts research and seeks qualified people for the conduct of such research offering them a five year contract at $15,000 pe~ year. Mr. Hobbs further stated that as a national representative, he was a paid employee, covering four states and Mrs. Bravo was also paid, having four chapters under her jurisdiction. In answer to a question Mrs. Bravo stated that one local child, three in St. Petersburg and one in Oldsmar were being supported by the Leukemia Society through payment of drugs, bills and other assistance, Both Mr. Deeb and Mrs. Bravo agreed that their respective organizations did not duplicate each others efforts, and also agreed their solicitation should be at different times. At this time the representatives were dismissed but it was suggested that they wait for a decision from the Board. After the representa- tives left the room, the Board discussed the matter at length. \..;) 7n ,\ r " . " ' ~ " . ~ ., 1, ,'.1. ~:.
