CLEARWATER PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD Minutes of the Meeting May 20, 1994 Clearwater Public Library 9:00 a.m. - 10:20 a.m. PRESENT: wilbert Bacon, Vice Chair Trudi 8ils Estelle Dunn Brenda Hunter Thalia Kelsey Pamela LeClair Katherine Merriam William Raffaniello Dr. Arlita Hallam, ex-officio l\BSENT: Dr. David Berry, excused Joanne Laurenti, excused Herbert Wickersham, excused GUESTS: Jan Bradley, CPLS staff Marsha McGrath, CPLS staff Shirley Hunt, GCPL Foundation, Inc. Vice Chair Tony Bacon called the meeting to order at 9:00 a.m. Mrs. Merriam moved to approve the minutes of the April Board meeting as submitted. The motion was seconded and approved unanimously. MOTION CARRIES Marsha McGrath, Youth Services Division Manager, gave a presentation on the Summer Reading Program for children beginning in June. Several new programs will be featured this year. Mr. Bacon di&cussed the idea of the Pinellas Computer Club teaching computer classes for senior citizens starting in the fall at the Library. Dr. Hallam noted that there are no public computers available at the Library for such use. There is a possibility that some computers might tie available a year from now. The Board approved the concept of a computer class for senior oi tizens, subject to the availability of computers. Mr. Bacon will report back to the computer club and will check for computer availability from the club and from the Pinellas County school System. Mr. Bacon discussed his concern about lack of publicity in The st. Petersburq Times concerning library programs, events, joining the pinellas Public Library Cooperative, ete. Jan Bradley of the Library staff spoke on her role in public relations for the Library. Ms. Bradley noted the importance in waiting until closer to the October 1 date for Cooperative publicity. The Library already receives daIly many calls on this issue. Ms. Bradley commented on publicity the Library has received in the newspaper and is pleased with the coverage. Ms. Bradley distributed various brochures, placemats, book bags, and magnets to the Board members. Dr. Hallam gave an update on the FREENET presentation at Main Library on May 5th attended by an assortment of people of all ages and backgrounds. The Suncoast FREENET equipment should be up and operating by mid-summer at the Tampa-Hillsborough County Public Library. . , . '.. . " .' < ," , +' . " #'. .; ". ' ',... , , ' .' . . . ...... ~!,:., ' ... .... Mr. Hunt distributed a current Foundation 'wish list on publications. Dr. Hallam reported the Friends of the Clearwater Library will not meet until fall. The Friends' scholarship committee met on May 18 to make their decision on scholarship awards to Library staff who applied and are doing undergraduate work. Mr. Bacon expressed sympathy to Dr. Berry and family on the loss of his son-in-law. Mrs. Dunn questioned whether the Cooperative Board will be expanded. Dr. Hallam is not aware of expansion of the Board at this time, but noted that clearwater would be eligible to have representation in 1995. Dr. Hallam reported the FY 1994/95 budgets are dUe. The Library's budget is flat this year. Renovation of the second floor reference area and third floor storage area to accomodate new administrative offices is approved for this FY 1993/94. Additional staff, 13.3 full time equivalents, will be hired for October 1, 1994, paid by Cooperative funds. The proposed gifts ordinance will now be a management policy. The Board will adjourn until september 16, 1994. Mr. Bacon announced his absence from the September Board meeting as he will be out of town. Joanne Laurenti, new Vice Chair, will chair the September meeting. The meeting was adjourneq at 10:20 a.m.
