KIOSK COMMITTEE
LIBRARY BOARD
March 21, 1994
Committee members Tony Bacon, Estelle Dunn, and Herb
Wickersham met, with Library Director Arlita Hallam, at 1:30 p.m.
on Monday, March 21, 1994, in the 3rd floor Main Library conference
room.
The committee had been asked to consider .the proposal of A to
Z Classifieds (CompuWizard) to place touchscreen online computer
bulletin boards in the lobbies of the Main and East 'Libraries. The
computerized bulletin boards will contain classified ads for jobs,
real estate, pets, and restaurants, as ,well as community
information (clubs and organizations, tourist. attractions,
churches, etc.). Because the Library is willing to place the
kiosks, CompuWizard would also devote one section of the touch-
screen to a highlighted library information bulletin board. The
successive library screens would feature library branches, hours,
services, and programs. The Library would provide the information
to be included.
The board committee agreed upon the following:
(1) This would not be a duplication of Freenet services because
Freenet will appeal to the home or business user of computers and
modems. The A to Z Directory will appeal to the casual passer-by.
L.:~;'
, .1
(2) The K to Z Directory will be placed in the lobby of the East
and Main Libraries. As more directories are available, they may be
placed in the lobbies at the Countryside, North Greenwood, and
Beach Branches. In the lobby, it will be with other types of
classified advertising (newspapers) and will not be as disturbing
as in the Library proper.
(3) If there are citizen complaints or if the directories are not
maintained in good working order, the Library Director has
authority to have them removed without coming back to the Library
Board. The Library Director also has responsibility for monitoring
the content of the classified advertising to make certain it is
appropriate for this public space. There will be no "personals".
(4) The wording on the case which now reads "A to Z Classifieds"
must be changed to "Community Information" in large print. wi th
"Provided by A to Z classifieds" in small print... or "A to Z
Community DirectoryU in large print. The word "Classifieds" should
not appear in the large print.
The committee adjourned after viewing the demonstration of the
Xerigraphics scanning equipment in the Adler Room.
Submitted,
Arlita Hallam
