Library Director's Report November, :!.992 A. Letters have been sent to David Waddell and Commissioner Deegan by Dr. Berry and the Library Director (copie~ mailed to the Board). The Waddell censorship case is considered closed. B. The following information is provided in response to board requests relating to Countryside and East Branch landscaping. (1) Countryside: Watering restrictions in summer, 1992, only permitted four hours of watering for the property. With 12 stations, each area could only be watered a few minutes. Some stations were converted to drip irrigation, but there was still not adequate coverage to save the plantings. Therefore, a conscious decision was made by the Nursery Division to save the front area at the expense of the rear entrance. Irrigation has now been resumed at twice a week, but p1antings in the back were lost. The department will re-seed when the timing is appropriate. (2) East Branch: Berm reconstruction is half-finished. The bush which was blocking the view at the Belcher driveway will be cut back or replaced with something lower and leS8 bushy. ,C. This year's budget includes money for a library building program. We are preparing requests for proposal to hire a library building consultant to do a needs assessment and building program for the Main Library. D. The enclosed policies are currently in force, but have evidently never been formally adopted by the Library Board. I am recommending that they b~ reviewed and adopted at the November meeting. E. A Library Board notebook will be provided each member at the November meeting. It will contain a current roster, organization charts, policies and ordinances as well as sections for you to add your minutes, agenda packets, correspondence etc. in the future. If you will maintain your notebook as long as you are on the board, it can then be passed on to your board replacement when your term expires. All materials provided to you will be pre-punched. F. Library hours are currently: Hon. - \~ed. Nain Library 9 9 East Library 9 9 Countryside Library 9 9 North Greenwood N, Th, F. 9 5 Beach N - F 9 5 Th. - Sat. 9 5 9 5 9 5 T & W 11:30 8 The busiest day at all branches is Monday, followed by Saturday. Then Wednesday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday. Because Thursday evening had the lightest uset the libraries began closing at 5:00 p.m. on Thursdays in 1983. If the Library Board would like to ,recommend opening an additional eveningt I would suggest opening only the Main Library on Thursday nights until 9:00 p.m. It is not a good idea to open a branch without Main Library reference and backup support. We may want to wait until after February\s output measures survey to Ree if additional hours arc being requested.
