Minutes of the Meeting
APRIL 20, 1990

9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.

Chairman William Donovan called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.
Dr. Berry moved to accept the minutes of the last meeting as submitted.
The motion was seconded and approved.
Mr. Donovan reported that Mrs. Nielsen was reappointed to a second
term on the Board. Mrs. Mielke noted that Dr. Georg Loewenstein, a former
Library Board member, recently celebrated his lOOth birthday.
Mrs. Hielke reported that the Long Range Planning Committee will be
meeting Tuesday, May 8, at 12:00 noon, ~(ain Library. The newspapers will
be notified. Mrs. Mielke 'invited the Board to attend. Mrs. Jan Regulski,
Chair, expects it could take a year to put together the parameters.
Mrs. Nielke asked the Board to host a Staff Appreciation Day, Nay 18,
11:30 a.m. following the Library Board meeting. Lunch will be provided
for the staff. The Library Board meeting \..dll be moved to 10: 30 a.m. that
day instead of the 9:30 a.m. meeting time.
Mrs. Mielke distributed parking permits to Board members enabling
them to free parking while on volunteer time at the ~Iain Library.
Dr. Berry reported on a successful Library Day in Tallahassee. Governor
Nartinez spoke to the group. More representatives were in attendunce'this
year. Dr. Berry stressed the importance of library representation, since
major lobbying groups are in at'tendance at the same time.
Mrs. ~lielke will send applications to the Board for the Florida
Governor's Conference on Library and Information services to be held
December 3-5, 1990. Deadline for completed application forms is July 1,
1990. The White House Conference on Libraries will be held in July, 1991.
Mrs. Hyman reported on the 'April 5, 1990 meeting of The Greater Clearwater
Public Library Foundation, Inc. which she attended us Library Board liaison
(report attached).

Dr. Berry encouraged the Library Board to attend the Friends of the
Clearwater Library Spring Banquet on April 28 at the Holiday Inn Surfslde
with Peter Meinke as guest speaker. New officers of the Friends are installed
at the banquet. Dr. Berry suggested a formal ways and means committee may
be designated to determine other avenues of funding, since book sales have
been down.
Mr. Hunt, Executive Director of The Greater Clearwater Fublic Library
Foundation, Inc. reminded the Board of the Cognoscenti Auction on April 27,
6:30 p.m. at Main Library. The Auction consists of a silent auction and
audible auction after a champagne box supper. A minimum $25.00 membership
entitles one to admission to this event.
Hrs. Hielke reported that the Main Library has a new l:lghted sign affixed
to the building on the east side (Osceola Avenue). ~Irs. Mielke also remarked
that the Pinellas County Library Cooperative Board has hired Bernadette Storck
as Librarian.
Mr. Wilson suggested that money could be earmarked through the Foundation
for FAX machines for the Library a little at a time, since the grant request
from GTE was not funded. Mrs. Mielke and Mr. Hunt stated that the Foundation
will be going baq~ to GTE for funding.
A special children's program will be held ,at Countryside and ~lain Library
during the day of April 27. with author Dean Hughes, culminating in a Read-In
program at East that evening. A contribution of $1,000 from a local patron
paid for Nr. Hughes" expenses for this ,program.
The Board discussed the previous proposal for Pinellas County to be
a subregional library for the blind and physically handicapped. The State
Library held off a decision on this proposal until the Library Cooperative
was formed. Hrs. ~Iielke commented that Susan David is our volunteer literacy
coordinator. A new project now being encouraged is one to include mothers
and children to learn to read together.
Next month's meeting will include nominations far Board officers.
Mrs. Nielsen, Mrs. Watson, and Mrs. Merriam were appointed to a nominating
committee by Chairman William Donovan.

Report on ~reater Clearwater Public Library Foundation
Meeting of AprilS, 1990
1. The Executive Director, Shirley Hunt, plans to make a presentation
at the next meeting regarding the "Planned Giving" program that he
is working on.
2. There is a Children's Program coming up funded by a gift to the
Foundation. This should help develop interest in the Foundation.
3. Linda discussed the cooperative agreement which the Library Board
requested between the City and the Board in order to prevent budget
cuts when Foundation monies increase.
4. A report on the upcoming Book Auction by the committee members.
The Auction will include a silent auction as well this year.
s. AT&T rejected the Boardfs request for monies to do a needs assessment
for a research library. And GTE turned down the FAX machine proposal.
But other corporate possibilities are still available.
