Chairman William Donovan called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m.
Mr. Panush moved to accept the minutes of the December meeting as submitted.
The motion was seconded and approved unanimously.
Mrs. Mielke explained the new CL Cat online catalog with which a record
can be found by key word when searching any title or subject in the collection.
Mrs. Linda Lange, Technical Services Division ManagerJ demonstrated how the
new online catalog is used. This powerful reference tool will replace the
card catalog.
Mrs. Mielke reviewed statistics on circulation, reference transactionst
and collection of the Main Library and branches. Clearwater Public Library
System set a record for all use statistics.
A discussion of che Penny for Pinellas $3.0 million for Main Library
renovation resulted from questions related to downtown redevelopment. The
Long Range Planning Committee will address Hain Library renovation and long
range service program. Also to be addressed is the Pinellas Cooperative's
relationship with the Clearwater Public Library System. Board members discussed
various ideas about downtown, such as Naas Brothers' bankruptcy.
~lrs. Mielke dis~ussed the current status of the Tampa Bay Library Consortium.
Clearwater Public Library System is a member of the Consortium and shares
resources with area libraries.
Hrs. Mielke has requusted copies of the minuteD of meetings on the Pinellas
County Library Cooperative be sent to keep the Board Rnd City Administration
apprised of "cooperative" proj eets.
Mrs. Hyman\s report on the January 4. 1990t Greater Clearwater Public
Library Foundation meeting which she attended as Library Board liaison is attached.
Dr. Berry reported that the membership in Friends of the Clearwater Library
continues to grow. The Adler Series is ready to begin. It will soon be time
for election of new officers of the Friends. Mr. Hutchens has been named to

Chair the nominating committee and has asked the Library Board for names
of volunteers who might be interested in the Friends Board.
Mrs. Hyman distributed an upbeat article on libraries from Time magazine
entitled "Get Me a Ladder at the Library," which describes the wide array of
services available at public libraries around the United States.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:45 a.m.

Report on Greater Clearwater Library Foundation Board Meeting
January 4, 1990
The Annual Meeting of the Borird was held and directors and officers
were elected.
The monthly meeting commenced with a report by Chairman John Slaughter
on the meeting held with the City officials regarding the downtown
development. No hard conclusions or predict:i.ons'came out of that meeting.
It was decided that the long range planning committee of the Board will
continue in formation and hope to have more contact with the City as
it proceeds.
Shirley Hunt discussed an upcoming children's program which was looking
for some funding and the Board approved a donation to help it get under~ay.
A donation was made to the Foundation by 3 Library staff member for the
express use of purchasing a computer for the library.
Shirley discussed the possibility of including a Friends' Membership in
the Membership package of this organization to.benefit both groups. Also,
mention of the possibility of having a page in the FOCL Point for this
organization to disseminate news.
The next meeting will encompass the actual criteria for measuring and
becoming one of the 50 best libraries in the U.S.' Information pertinent
to this was handed out for prior reading.
The Cognoscente Auction will take place April 27 or April 28.
