Chairman Frank Barnicle called the me~ting to order at 9:30 a.m. The
minutes of the September Board meeting were approved as submitted.
Mrs. Mielke gave an update on the Clearwater Countryside Library. The
slab has been poured except for the area where a tower guidewire has not yet
been removed. The furniture bid is on the' agenda for City Commission approval
November 5, 1987. There was discussion of planning the dedication ceremony
for the Clearwater Countryside Library for either October or Novembert 1988,
as winter residents and vacationers would be able to attend.
Mrs. Mielke reported no update on the County Library Cooperative Plan.
At this time, Board members were given a demonstration by Lois ~Inroon and
Jean Thompson of the Clearwater East Library on the computerized card catalog
and magazine collection. With the computerized card catalog, patrons are able
to determine what books are available in the collectiont as well as whether
the book is on the shelf or checked out. Books are also displayed by location,
so that a book can be requested at a branch facility and sent to the facility
nearest the patron for check out. Backup for the computerized card catalog
is available in the form of microfiche. The computerized index to the magazine
collection is called InfoTrae. This index is updated every six months on
floppy disk and every month on compact disk by the vendor. The equipment will
also produce a copy of the magazine article being searched for lOe a copy.
Mr. Barnicle asked Ms. Pequignot and Mr. Serri1l to serve with Mrs. Mielke
on a nominating committee for new Board officers for 1988.
Mrs. Hyman remarked about the improvement in the exterior maintenance of
the grounds at Clearwater East. Mrs. Hyman still suggests an outside trash
receptacle for trash and cigarette disposal.
Mrs. Hyman asked if fines' are dismissed when a weather alert is in force.
Mrs. Mielke will discuss this matter with staff.

There was discussion of the video collection. Videotapes are'~eeded when
damaged and purchased weekly from the book vendor. Videotapes can be returned
in special tape dropboxes at Nain l.ibrary and the regular drop at Clearwater
East, and in the bookdrop located in Countryside.
Mr. Barnicle thanked Mr. Serrill for the article on the Database Place
service at Main Library in the Pinel1as County Review.
Dr. David Berry announced the Friends of the Clearwater Library's fall
luncheon on Saturday, November 14, at Chateau Nadrid in downtown Clearwater.
David Kelsey will speak on international terrorism. Dr. Berry encouraged
Board members and their friends to make reservations to attend.
Ms. Althea Andersen discussed plans for the Sixth Annual Adler Literary
Arts Festival in February, 1988. The Festival begins with a Book & Author
Luncheon on Thursday, February 11, 1988, at Ruth Eckerd Hall. Twelve Florida-
based authors have accepted invitations to attend. February 18 will feature
cwo travel authors speaking in the morning at ~lain Library about writing travel
books. On ~hursday, February 25, mystery writer William Tapply will be guest
speaker. Also in the planning stage for that evening will be a "Murder in the
Stacks" mystery party in which Mr. Tapply will take part along with a local
theaier group. On Sunday afternoon, March 6, children\s author Patricia
MacLachUm will speak on children's literature. A special afternoon is being
plann~d on the west patio at ~lain Library for Ms. MacLachlan's speaking
engagement for the whole family.
Ms. Andersen also reported that Cleveland Amory has been invited for
Thursday evening, December 17th, 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Main Library. The
Greater Clearwater Public Library Foundation, Inc. has planned a cocktail
party for Mr. Amory's visit. Hr. Amory's newest book is entitled The Cat
Who Came for Christmas.
Board members discussed meeting at the North Greenwood Branch Library
for the November Board meeting. The date for this meeting was changed to
November 13 from November 20, as Mrs. Mielke will be out of town.
The next Friends of the Clearwater Library book sale is November 6 and 7
at Main Library.
Mr. Serrill mentioned a local cartoonist who has written a book for future
consideration as a speaker.
