Chairman Pate Hutchens called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. The
minutes of the last meeting were approved as submitted.
Linda Lange of the Library staff was asked to ,report on the present'
date due slip used with the Library's CLSI computerized circulation system.
The present method of check-out produces a printed slip with patron number,
item number, and due date. Concerns from a few patrons and Mrs. Vollbracht
brought this subject up for review. The Library staff presented an overview
of the current procedure:
1. less information printed on the form means quicker
check-out time for the patron
2. expense of changing software
3. changing software means lower down on vendor's priority
list, since vendor prefers doing on-line cataloging first
Other automated libraries stamp the books with a due date as well as supplying
the date due slip which is cumbersome and time consuming. Mrs. l-lielke reported
that complaints on date due slips are few. Mr. Panush recommended that the
staff continue the present system for six months. circling the date due on the
slip for the patron, then re-evaluate the complaints at the end of the six
month period. Mrs. Mielke will ask staff to keep track of complaints. Mrs.
Lange noted that any patron can call the Library to ask the due date on their
materials.
Mrs. Mielke reviewed the progress of the DIALOG project which has been
names liThe Database Place." The service should be up and running in January.
EASYNET is the name of the gateway software the Library will be using. After
a reference interview with a librarian, and if a computer search is deemed
necessarYt a patron can call EASYNET, have them select a database, and do a
search for $3.00. For an additional $5.00 charge, 20 citations will be printed
out. The Greater Clearwater Public Library Foundation, Inc. will fund three
searches per patron in one year. After the three searches, the patron will pay
for searches. Clearwater Public Library System will help out to control the
costs. The Foundation paid for the equipment and the Library supplied the
Mr. Hutchens reported on the status of the Countryside Branch Library.
The Architectural Selection Committee's recommendation was not approved
by the City Commission. The Selection Committee wrote a letter to the City
Commission stating their concerns with duplicating the Clearwater East
facility on the Countryside site. The City Commission, as a result) asked
the Selection Committee to review a different design from tolilliams Architects
Chartered. Should that design not be acceptable, a design would be requested

dataline. The Foundation is receiving funding for three years from the
GTE Foundation for Database Place project.
Ms. Maroon reported on the Adler Literary Art~ Festival plans for 1987.
This year's festival will begin with a Book & Author Luncheon at Ruth Eckerd
Hall on February 5th featuring 18 authors. Tickets are $20.00. Featured on
February 12th is Jean Craighead George, children's author; February 19th
will be a panel discussion; and February 28th will be the gala champaign
reception featuring David Chandler at 7:30 p.m. .
Mr. Hutchens announced the death of Mr. Martin Moran) Library Board
member.

The name of the Countrys~de library facility is not yet decided.
Mrs. Mielke reported that a sign has been requested to be placed on the
library site, mOO press releases will be going out soon.
Mr. Panush asked that the Board be able to endorse the architectural
contract before approval.
Mrs. Mielke stated that $225)000 has been budgeted for books for
Countryside. The books will be ordered and placed on the shelves at Clearwater
East for check-out until the Countryside facility is finished.
The Board expressed concern over the berm and roof design at Clearwater
East. Mr. Hutchens stated the Selection Committee would recommend a design
without these items. Mr. Hutchens encouraged Board suggestions on design
ideas. Mrs. ~[ielke reported that construction costs are estimated at $920,000.
~lr. Don Williams of Williams Architects Chartered will be preparing a renderIng
of the proposed design.
. Hrs. Hielke reported that the Tampa Bay Library Consortium's Project
Director, Bob Martin, will be available in the future to speak to the Board
on the Consortium project) SUNLINE.
Mr. Panush organized a candidates forum of 29 candidates in October before
the November election. The Clearwater East Library co-sponsored the forum with
eight other organizations.

~[rs. Mielke mentioned that Commissioner Garvey requested that Clearwater
City Manager, Tony Shoemaker. and Linda Mielke talk to Dunedin City Manager,
John Lawrencet about an inter local agreement with Dunedin and .Clearwater.
.After meeting with Mr. Lawrence, Mrs. Mielke reported that Dunedin turned
down the proposal.
