MINUTES OF THE MEETING 26 APRIL 1985 Clearwa'ter Public Library 9:30 a.m. - 10:25 a.m. PRESENT: ABSENT: Mr. Pate Hutchens, Chairman Mr. Frank Barnicle Mr. G. (Helen) Diller Ms. Althea Andersen Mrs. Carolyn Moore Chairman Pate Hutchens called the meeting to order at 9:30 a.m. The minutes of the last meeting were approved with the additional notation that Mr. Hutchens has appointed Mr. Barnicle to serve on the Youth & Family Assistance Committee as mentioned on page two, paragraph three. Mrs. Hyman mentioned she has been asked by the Mayor to serve on the "Hoopla Committee" for Clearwater East Library. Mr. Hutchens thanked Mr. Korosy for his service on the Board as his term is ending. In Mrs. Wickersham's absence, Mrs. Mielke gave a presentation on the Greater Clearwater Public Library Foundation, Inc. The two major goals of the Foundation are: 1) to provide enhancements to the Clearwater Public Library System beyond what is provided for from the traditional tax base funding from the City of Clearwater; 2) to provide access to library facilities for people who do not have public library service. An example is the Youth & Family Assistance Program mentioned below. Mrs. Mielke reviewed the programs the Foundation is involved with, including Scholar.'s Choice. The Foundation has also been the recipient of a $20,000 grant from a major public utility, with local matches from area businesses, for DIALOG, a project which Carolyn Moore summarized for the, Board later in the meeting. A computer has also been donated to the Foundation from Paradyne Corporation. The first membership appeal has been successful. The Youth & Family Assistance Program in cooperation with the Friends of the Library and the Library Board is about to begin. Mrs. Mielke discussed the Foundation's assistance to Palm Harbor in site selection for a Palm Harbor library. CLEARWATER PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD Minutes of the Meeting April 26, 1985 Page 2 Mrs. Mielke discussed an idea of researching library service in the Condon Gardens area (east of U.S. 19) through Community Development Block Grant funds. If the Board is willing, Mr.s. Mielke will pursue applying for such funds in the future. Block Grant funds are presently being used to renovate the North Greenwood Branch. Board members asked about statistics on population. use. and location of such a proposed facility. The Board agreed that Mrs. Mielke should continue investigating' this matter. Mrs. Moore of the Library staff gave a slide presentation on the DIALOG project which will be in service in the fall at the Library. The Clearwater Public Library will be the first public library in Florida to offer this service. Mrs. Mielke displayed a stained glass sign to be placed in the entrance of Clearwater East Library. A similar sign is displayed in the Main Library entrance area. The parking lot at North Greenwood Branch is completed and offers four spaces on the front lawn area of the branch. Mr. Hutchens asked about an agenda for a May meeting. Mrs. Jan Regulski would like to discuss plans for the grand opening of Clearwater East Library. Mrs. Mielke will discuss the budget. The next meeting will be scheduled for Hay 17th. The meeting was adjourned at 10:25 n.m. Susan Doel, Secretary
