Bergmann} Planning Diroctor ~ Blliot Hardaway, Libror)' Director ~ FROM: COPIES: SUBJECT: Library Study -- Book llObile Sites DATE: Novembor 17, 1971 The Planning Department haa reviewed the community needs for each library and the implied book mobile service to serve the broader segment of the community which cannot walk to the exiating and proposed libraries. Due to the desire to servc walk-in p~trona, a maximum of one mile rudius was established. This was referenced in other repo~ts as the ideal maxicwm ~alking distance. Due to some problems of location, however) the original mile radius was u~dified to 1 1/4 mile. Another standard criteria is that a service population for book mobiles should be no less than approximately 10,000, with the ideal figure .appro~~iLnutely 15,000 und a sn3X:':'mWIl of 25,0~O. The latter more clearly reflects a different size cOlmnunity with different densities than Clearwater. Pive book mobile sites arc identified on the attached map. One is at Sears Town and would serve approximately 9,000 persona in the expAnded 1 1/4 mile area. Another site 1. on Gulf-to-Bay in the shopping center 010 blocks eaDt of Crest Lake which has as its major tenant the Pantry 1)r1de food chain. This extended service area again encompasses approxima1liy 9,000 people. ,\ third site is at IHghlcmd and [,unset l'oint Road at the shopping center on the southeast corner. Its extended service area would serve approxi- mately 10,000 people (This does exclude an orea of overlap \,Jit:h Dunedin Library.). A fourth site is proposed near the new ~avinBs & Loan on hunset ~oint Road west of U. S. 19. This site ~ould serve approximately 4,600 people at p~eaent. The fifth oite would be Bt the park ac.reage in DelOra near the \Jatar tank and Hould serve) in its extended area, S,SOO people. the East Clearwater Main Branch is proposed to be located at Ualcher and Druid and would 8arve the largest walk-in potential in the community; i. e., approximately 13,000 people. (As an sside, staff would recommend amendins.the Comprehensive Plan to reflQc~ the proposed Eust Branch 01 to oeloction.) 'l'be Clear\.1ater buuch n rHnch, serving ull cf Cl.arwater Beach nnd Island Eotatcs, is assumed to serve under 6,000 people. Thu8 no book mobile is proposed at the northern end. All of the above 4sain relates to walk-in patronage und would cover UIOst of the present Clearwater area. Future considerations ~ould, of course) add a book mobile ~ite in the Greenbriar neighborhood. All of the figures mentioned were derived from approximate unit count multiplied by persoua per household. ThUB East CloDrwater, for example, is derived by a factor of 3i the Palmetto Branch by 3.5; the Clearwater Beacb Branch by a factor ot 2. 'l'heae demographic characteristic6 represent an attempt to relate to a true population distribution by family Si~8 and age group1nS9. W PAB:bd Att.
