BOX 1328 Clearwater, Florida Miss Sarah Byers, Director The Clearwater Library Board met on March 18, 1966 at the main library. Present were members: Coleman, Filewicz, Killeffer, Byers and Akerman. Mrs. Cartwright was wel- corned as a visitor. A motion was made to recommend Mrs. Filewicz for xeappointrnent. The board wished to express its thanks to her for her guidance and help and voted unanimously to that effect. Mr. Stewart will put this before the City Commission. Mrs. Filewicz stated that she found the AAUW Study Group to be most interested in the workings of the library, she told of several suggestions made by them. The board appreciates Mrs. Filewicz work with this group, answering their questions and explaining many of the various details connected with the library. The board wished to express love and sympathy to Miss Byers for the loss of her mother. Dr. Coleman represented the board in attendance at the funeral. Miss Byers presented statistics for January and February including a report on items of significance which are recorded in the minutes but summarized. Library week is April 17 to 23. Miss Byers would like to invite small groups ,{ of adults to come in after eight o'clock on certain nights in order to apprise them more fully of library facilities. Tea or coffee could be served. Convention time is April 28 and it was suggested by Miss Byers that some displays would b,~ helpfUl. .., LOCI\L I'IISTORY. COLUCTIO:"\ - '\ ~ . ".. . ' , . .... '. . - ". . . . . . ~ :" . " . I,. '. In addition to the annual statistical report attached, we should like to note the following items of significance which are already recorded in the minutes, but should be included in this summary. 1.) After extensive negotiation, the total sum of $1934.15, collected by the Friends of the Library for the Wickman Memorial Collection, was transferred to the Library Board to be administered by it for the same purpose. As a result, under the direction of ~tr. Killeffer, the Wickman Collection is progressing much more rapidly, and is already outstanding in quantity and quality. 2.) About the same time a small sum ($158.22) was also transferred from the Friends general, treasury to the Board to be used as may seem advisable. 3.) Housing for the large, and very valuable periodical files has been in- creased by installation of additional stacks in the areas already in use for then and along the walls of the garage area. In the latter, we are filing the very special technical magazines and abstracts, which are in increasing demand. These are provided us by men employed in many special fields. One of the needs in the not too distant future will be replacement and enlargement of the periodical collection. Many titles are very nearly worn out with very heavy usage as well as with aging, and the need for additional titles and additional years is more apparent daily. Reprint sets and Micro-film sets are exceedingly expensive. Resorting to micro sets would also entail more reading machines and space for them than we see possible, or advisable. -.....' c LOCAL H1STORt. The planned arrangement will call for bringing the biography sec- tion of the non-fiction into the west wall cases. This move will relieve the non-fiction area for a short time and allow us to add some very much needed material. 5.) The Board) as well as the staff, is much encouraged by the prospect of a sizable improvement project in the fairly near future. We believe that this most recent plan will not only provide large increase in space for both books and seating, but will add immeasurably to the appearance of the present plant. Many peek periods find us with standing room only. Some days, the last two hours of operation (from 6-8 P.~t.) the circulation is more than one third of the en- tire day, and the reference work is, in like proportion. We are more than ever fortunate in having a police officer on duty to assist in maintaining order while the attention of seven members of the regular staff is occupied with filling the public's needs during these evening hours. The necessity to add to the personnel is very apparent to all concerned) including the city managerl and every effort will be made in the next budget to cover such additions. 6.) In the matter of personnell we have been, for the most partl very for- tunate. All members of the regular staff have shown unusual initiative in consid- ering, experimenting, and putting into practice better methods of operationl loeAl HISTORY, COll(CT10~ ' " , " ,', ~ ,,' , ' " " .: ~'.: ' 'I' ' ~~!~..!;, .~:' ': '.', '.' , ~: ~.-!, ~ Page -3- better relations with the public, and better communication with one another. June Sterclio has found the courses in Library Science at the University of South Florida both stimulating and helpful. She continues to work toward this degree, with good prospects of entering on ~tasters work at the completion of the Library Science degree. The loss of Phyllis McClarnand last summer was one of our worst, but we shall hope to have her with us again whenever her husband's working location may again bring them to Clearwater. In the next few months we are due to lose another of our most efficient girls, Emily Ann Fattig, who plans to join her husband in Connecticut where he is stationed. Reallocating the many duties she now fills will call for several staff adjustments. Fortunately the two young girlS we have on part- time are exceptionally fine workers. 7,) In the matter of gifts, we have had many excellent books and magazines, as usual, but the two additions to our art collection are particularly welcome. Rear Admiral Earl Ddily gave us an excellent painting of his own doing which is especially good with our building style and decor. The Director claims most of the credit for this acquisition, having used 'a lot of persuasion over a period of time. The recent gift of a large Chinese print, oil on silk, was made by ~frs. Charles Tingley in memory of her husband. Plates have been affixed to all the special gift items of furnishings and art pieces. '''--. lOC,\l 11IS'roRV COll(ClION '. ! . .
