" ,......, .........y The Library Board met in special sossion Dec. 9, 1957, to discuss the possible establishment of a branch library at CleaI101ater Beach. The meeting was held'in the workroom of the Main Library, with all members present. It was suggested (Martens) that the group begin to think what would be needed or wanted if a branch library is located on Clearwater Beach Island, in a proposed civic center there. A possible location is city-owned land west of Howard John- son's. Architects at work on the civic center project are to keep Library wants in mind and let the Board know, as the plan progresses. In conjunction with this discussion, Miss Byers presented a summary of the cur~ rent and future needs of the city's library system (attached hereto). It was suggested that Mrs. Verna Nistendirk, extension representative of the State Library Board, come and make a survey of the entire library needs of Clearwater, and make a report to the Library Board. A motion was made (Martens), seconded (Bayly) and carried, that the librarian correspond with the State Library at Tallahassee concerning this. It was decided to address a letter to the city manager concerning the re-binding situation. Miss Byers stated the Civil Service Board will be watchful in behalf of the Li- brary Board) regarding personnel needed. The meeting adjourned at 5:3Q p.m. \ -J l.OCAl! Clearwater Public Library Clearwater, Florida June 2, 1958 Miss Sarah Byers, Librarian Status: Main Library (Branch detail below) STOCK: , Library has about 70,000 accessioned volumes and approximately 5,000 stored, many of which are duplicates and many infreguently used titles (except at certain periods of the year). Additions are made at the rate of 3000 - 4000 per year. Titles are se- lected. as nearly as money and space permit, according to the needs of this particular community. Such need can be largely judged by the use, and by the requests of the borrowing public. Predictions of future need can sometimes be made on the basis of predicted community developments. As compared to other towns of similar size the needs are more varied, and in different proportions, than might be expected. PLANT FACILITIES: At the main library the conditions are very crowded and inadequate in relation to seating) shelving, and work space. This has been much aggravated by the highly accelerated growth of the town, the proportionately-high school registration, and the establishment of new industries. The inadequacy of the plant is partly due to an obsolete heating system (which serves only a small portion of the building), and the lack of air con- ditioning. Absence of the latter makes it impossible to use certain areas during the summer season, except for storage. ) ---- PERSONNEL: The efforts of the staff are strained to the utmost by an unusually large circulation) large reference load, and the above- mentioned facilities. A staff of seven, plus one janitor ser- vices the library for 5B1~ hours weekly (open to the public). Branch Library---Palrnetto & Pennsylvania In addition to the generalities, stated or implied above) ~he Branch to the colored people is in particular need in respect to housing. Since it's beginning in 1950 the space has been doubled, and is again in need of expansion. The present building is being rented at a rental of $75.00 per month, and is in dire need of structural improvements. The alternative would be re- moval to other quarters. .tOCA"C FlrST'CTN COLlECfroN Jic'.~I-' ,'., . . \*\': : :: ~~>,.~. . , .'. 'h " . -. , " . .......... . : ; :1 ; Clearwater Public Library t"") Clea~inter, Florida Miss Sarah Byers, Librarian Recommendations---current: STOCK: Continue to add new titles and duplicates in accordance with needs and demands, in so far as funds and space permit. Gon- tinue to store usable duplicate, and infrequently use titles, in so far as space allows. The latter are necessary both for replacement, and for stocking branches and! or book-mobile. The high type of many of the gifts received provides excellent reserve stock mand many replacements. PLANT FACILITIES: Install new heating and air-conditioning units in main library and annex (house adjacent). Provide for the library operation to occupy the whole of the annex, part of which to be used for housing museum, part to provice reading area, mending operation, storage, special col- lections, or separate division. Open another large basement room to use of young people, after proper remodeli~g and redecorating. Room is adjacent to maga- zine files which are so much used by high school and college students, as well as adults. Expand non-fiction stacks into third floor (entirely contingent upon heating-air conditioning installation). PERSONNEL: Improve working conditions. Increase salaries to approach making them commensurate with the caliber of the service required, both mental and physical. Enlarge the number of staff members with discretion, with atten- tion to the needs of the community; and with an intent toward continuing the present sucessful operation in relation to the borrowing public, the transient reader, the reference patron, and the staff body. (Please refer to budget request submitted by li- brary director for consideration of detailS.) Recommendations---future: Initate plans for large addition to the north of the present build- ing, to be such that eventually reference and reading services could be well separated from the fiction, juvenile, and charge-out areas. In ne'''' wing consideration to ne,." and different services should also be given. '--' lOeA] RISTQ~' COLLECT/ON , . I '.' < . l' . ~ I '. , . .' . Dear Sir: We have plans for'building a home in Clearwater in the early future and we are somewhat at a loss as to the care our book5 may need in a somewhat more humid climate than that of Ohio. May we impose upon you for your advice as to whether it would be practical to move them to Clearwater or if it would be better to leave them with our married children who, in any event, would probably use them more frequently and to better advantage than we would. We have heard that the moist Pinellas County atmosphere in- duces mold and mustiness and if this actually is a tendency we would rather not cope with it. Thanking you in anticipation of your professional advice. Sincerely, Fred. F. Blewitt. \.J lqCAl! FlISr0lt' <:ollecrloN 1;i}"!~~',,,, :1< .' .t'" ':, .' We really think you can bring your books, in so far as climate is concerned. We do lacquer all of ours (not leatherl) for sake of cleanliness, .insects, and weather. Actually, we have practically: no problem:..' We hear that some, whose houses are improperly built, do have trouble to a certain extent. The big issue with most folks in Florida houses is space! They often do not realize what a difference that will ~ake. That's one of the reasons we receive so many gifts of books. Be sure to come see us when you get settled in Clea~~ater. We will be glad to advise you as to lacquer, procedure, etc. Cordially yours, Sarah Byers, Director o l.OCA"'f fllS10R:V (:OLLECTJON ;, .' .. '".., .';. > ~ .~
