The Library Board met in the workroom of the Library Oct. 15, 1957 at 4 p.m.
with all members present except John L. Martens.
The minutes were read and approved.
Funds allotted (or not allotted) for rebinding books came under discussion, in-
.\
eluding the suggestion of the city manager that library fines be used for such.
It was suggested that these matters be held in abeyance for the time being.
After further discussion, a motion was made and seconded that a letter be written'
by the board to the city manager; requesting the rebinding continuo to be paid
for as in the past, noting that the library fines fund is earmarked for a special
purpose and cannot be used otherwise.
Miss Byers reported that 88 volumes have been discarded and 3,582 'added to the
accessioned list to date, during the calendar year 1957. She discussed the trouble
experienced in the library with stealing of books and also tearing or destroying
of books.
While the current budget was under discussion, it was noted that there was consid-
erable difference in the final budget figures and the amount asked for. Total
request was for almost $85,000, which included $20,000 for the building of a Negro
Branch Library; also sums for painting and repairing the lighting at the Annex
north of the main Library, and air-conditioning or the main building.
The meeting adjourned at 5:15 after planning to have a called meeting in the near
future for library planning.
