The Library Board met for a regular meeting at 4 p. m. on Tuesday, Jan, 8, 1957 in the work room at the Library, with all members present except Mr. Martens. The minutes of the last previous meeting were read and approved. The chairman, Mr. Baker, welcomed two members of the AAUW; Mrs. CrO\...ell and Mrs. Benjamin, and a member of the League of Women Voters) Mrs. Dunham. Miss Byers discussed the inadequacy of the heating system in the Library Annex and reported that the city gas department suggested circulating heat by ducts from a furnace, or using suspended heaters. Also she reported that estimates had been turned in to the city on the necessary painting and lighting in that building. During a discussion of a new building for the Branch Library) Miss Byers presented building plans and costs for the Martha Washington Branch at Fairfax, Va., among others. It was decided to hold a special meeting Feb. 19 to discuss these further, as well as others which are expected to arrive by then. A little further discussion was held on the possibility of using the old radio building for the Branch, but the Board still feels it would be inadequate. Miss Byers reported that the circulation at the Main Library totaled 152,170 in 1956. Visitors called upon to make suggestions for improvement of lib. - Mrs. Crowell read article about state aid to lib. - we decided not to investigate this further. Miss Byers told the group that work orders for lighting and painting in the main library building and the "annex" had been approved by the City Commission. Miss Byers showed plans of branch libraries elsewhere, and discussion followed of their suitability here. The Board directed ~fiss Byers to include a , request for $20,000 in the new budget, to be used for building a branch library. It was suggested that City Manager Jack Tallent; Christine Morris, librar- ian at the Negro branch; and S. W. Curtis, principal of the Pinellas (Negro) High Schook, be asked to attend a meeting convenient to Mr. Tallent, to present a summary of data relating to the branch library and of its usefulness to the Negro community of Clearwater.
