New needs have been created and new ways or meeting them. First among the new activities came the Victory Book Campaign, managed by a committee of the civilian defense whe were assisted by members of the library ataft. It seemed logical that the library be collection oenter, store house and disbursement center tor the thou- eands ot books contribated by the people of this vicinity for t~ use of the armed forces. ne of the basement rooms was used tor this pru- pose. Secondly appeared those of the soldiers who were anxious to draw books f'rom the library. These men, most of them stationed in or Ie ar Clear~"Iater for only short periods of time, presented a real problem. It was most important that some arrangement be made whereby they could be permitted the same use of the library facilities as have Clearwater ~ residents. t was equally important that the rapidity with which they were being transferred should not cause an excessive 1058 of l~r8ry books. This problem was solved by requiring on each applicant's regis- tration. the signature ot a corr;;-::1ssioned officer, who would be rospgn- u1bleleor books 1n case of the applicant's defau~t in return of the , books. It has been a great satisfaction to know that about two hundred. of these men have had the full use of the library's materials tor ~- , portant researoh and stUdy, as well as recreational reading. The ser- : vices of the staff have been frequently drawn upon and glddly given. In certain instances special mateI'ials not owned" by the lfu 1'a1'Y have been immediate and gratifying. Besises those ~have had cards and drawn books, many others who did not apply for cards f~und the reading room a pleasant place in which to pass an hour or two.. The absence of many of the library' 8 good friends among the usual winter tourists who erae unable to oome this ,esson was partially compensated for by these men and their fam11ie~. Thirdly in importance should be mentioned tllabor troubles". Al- though the war has oaused less shortage here perhaps than it has 1n other establishments, nevertheless it has been felt. une of the girls of eight years service and experience married and moved fronl the city. Others bave Imoked with somewhat longing eyes toward war work with ehe government or enlistment in the armed services, but so far have not left the library employ. Next in o~er of consideration should be the flood of war books w1th Whioh the purchasing department has been faoed. As is to be ex- peoted in war time. the vastly larger number of books published, b~th tlet10n and non-fiction, deal with entirely, or touch upon, the war topios. It is to be noted with interest that almost all of theuout- standingly good writ1ng,done at this time is ?n war subjects. uf necessity th8 writers' as well as the redders minds, are keyed to these matters. To offset these books of a more or less serious na- ture thB publishers nave offered as "escape reading" a number of swift-paced mystery stories, a few good adventure tales, and some 1 ! , '1 I I I ~ , j+l ,~ ]:] I" I I,. .: r; '--1 t readable light romances.. The pub1.ic has been helpful in suggesting many:" of the titles of specinl interest to it. With 30 many from which to ; choose and the impos91b:llty of bu;vlnr:; All of them, the purchasing 1<1 departmAnt has been grateful for these suggestions, as well 9.S for ~ the lmmediste'snd enthusiastic response of the oatrons 1n reading the It books offerod to them. l.lany books of a te chnice.l natura ha va been .I in soecial demand. Owing to the Driea of those books, as well as to the fact that they necessarily become obsolete within a oomparat~vely short time, some restraint has been necessary 1n buying them. AS many as seemed at all practicable have been bought. Several patrons have ' . been speoially helpfu~ in giving or loaning material of this aort. Owing to~the we~l-known wartime rush of business, transportation am production prOblems have sometimes held up reoeipt of orders and oaused delay in placing the books on the shelves. The library staff appreciated the patrons consideration or these difficulties. It should be mentioned here also that the publio has not forgotten to make Q number of ve~ worth while donations to the 11brarr, ot --books not particularly suitable ror the Vlotor1 Book Campaign, but very useful as permanent additions to the library shelves. Brier mention should be made Of the newest branoh servioe offered by the library. With the cooperatl~n of the hospital or~lclals and volunteer staff and the library otr1clals a revolving collection of books has been made available to the eonvalesclng patients at. the Morton Plant Hos?ttal. . 'I'he library department haa found operation under war time condi- tions dlf~erent but not too d1gf1cult owing to the cooperation of the publio, the city ot~lo1als and the glrl~ of the starr, A brier statistical report tollowss Number ot books in the library: Juv1n11e.....36234 Adult........25360 ~- Number of books added during the past year: Juv4nila.....)_____l829 Adul t. . . . . . . .
