August 3, 1988 v The regular meeting of the Beautification Committee was held on Wednesday, August 3. 1988 at 9:30 a.m. at the City Hall Annex. Members present were Mrs. Milly Joplin, Chairperson Lisa Lanza, Mrs. Phoebe Moss, Ms. Jacquelyn Smith. Mrs. Eugenia Berry, Mr. Robert Bickerstaffe and Mrs. Emma Whitney were excused and Mrs. Ruth DuChateau and Ms. Paula Littlefield were absent. Mr. Ream Wilson was also in attendance. Chairperson Lanza called the meeting to order. The minutes of the July meeting were approved as mailed. Committee Reports-- Christmas Decorations - The Beach Civic Association asked about electrical outlets at Kruse Gardens. Chairperson Lanza reported that there are outlets there and they will be able to place small twinkle lights in the gardens during the holidays. Trees in K-Mart Parking Lot - Chairperson Lanza and Alan Mayberry went to look at the trees and Mr. Mayberry has agreed to talk to them about trimming the trees. Strip Shopping Center across from Cleveland Plaza - Discussion ensued on this sub- ject. Mr. Wilson was asked if the Committee should pursue requesting owners to upgrade the easement. He stated this area would eventually be included in the Streetscape and he would prefer to wait as approval is needed for improvements on a state road. Landscape in Piggly-Wiggly Shopping Center - Chairperson Lanza spoke to the land- scape person at this shopping center on Gulf-to-Bay. His name is Angelo Grieco, Suncoast Sweeping Service, Inc., P. O. Box 582, Palm Harbor, FI 34682 (phone 786-6362). He will prune the bushes and fertilize. Mrs,. Joplin asked about the sign ordinance. She said Chi Chi's illuminates a large camphor tree with floodlights and also put small twinkle lights on bushes at their loca- tion on Gulf-to-Bay. They received a letter from the City saying they were in violation and she did not know why. The Committee will invite John Richter, the Code Administrator. to a future meeting to give members a brief overview of the various ordinances they might be interested in regarding signs, fences and lights. The Committee asked Mr. Wilson what training is given to workers and the public about correct tree trimming. He said seminars are held periodically for our Nursery personnel. Mrs. Moss displayed an article about proper tree pruning whicq she wrote for the Morningside Homeowners Association. Discussion ensued and Mrs. Joplin Buggested inserting a brochure regarding the techniques of correct tree trimming in utility bills. Mr. Wilson thought it was a good idea and said he would look into it. , Recycling - Jazz Holiday The Committee would like to recycle as many aluminum cans and glass bottles as possible during the Jazz Holiday. Various suggestions were offered. The Committee asked Mr. Wilson to talk to Jim Maglio of Sanitation about the feasibility of the pro- ject and to inform Chairperson Lanza before the September meeting. It was agreed to 'offer the recycling to Clearwater groups but if no one is interested Mr. Ched Smiley of the Palm Harbor Senior Citizens would be contacted. Ms. Jacquelyn Smith suggested sending an appreciation letter to Joe Greenwood of Budget Rent-A-Car.
