Members present were Mr. Robert Bickcrataffe, 'Mrs. Milly Joplin, Chairperson Lisa Lanza, Mrs. Phoebe MOBS nnd Mrs. Emma Whitney. Mrs. Eugenia Berry and Ms. Jacquelyn Smith were excused and Mrs. Ruth DuChateau and Ms. Paula Littlefield were absent. Ms. Diane Steinle of the St. Petersburg Times was also in attendance. I.~. , Chairperson Lanza called the meeting to order. She stated thore was no mention in the April minutes of the meeting she and Mrs. Moss had with Keith Crawford and Bob Morrison regarding holiday decorations. Also, in the seventh paragraph, first page) Mrs. Whitney is to bring requests to the'Comrnittee rather than directly to Keith Crawford and we in ~urn will go to Mr. Crawford with a memorandum. Next para- graph, should read lIupgrade and new electrical equipment so that it can support future demands for electrical service.1t After these corrections and additions, Mrs. ,Moss moved to accept the minutes as amended and it was seconded by Mrs. Joplin. ! Chairperson Lanza asked Ms. Terry Finch, Environmental Speciali8~, to the meet- ing. Ms. Finch said the Environmental Section will be severely impacted by the loss of an inspector as the positions all overlap. Consequently some programs will have to be dropped. She said that with increasing rules and regulations in the state the Environmental Section will be unable to respond to all of them. Discussion followed and it was agreed the Chairperson would draft a memorandum to the City Manager to look into other areas for cuts in the budget as the Committee believes the protection of the environment in Clearwater is essential as the population of the City and County increase. Chairperson Lanza informed the Committee of several items. 1) An article appeared in the paper about the presentation by the Committee of a .Certificate of Appreciation to Frisby, Inc. Z) Chairperson Lanza said Ms. Paula Littlefield, an agriculture teacher at , Countryside High School, was appointed to the Committee. 3) Keith Crawford received a memo from Mrs. Paula Boulton which was forwarded to Chairperson Lanza, regarding holiday decorations on the ,Beach.' '4) A letter was received from the City of Dunedin Parks Director explaining their Christmas tree which is similar to the one in Clearwater~ 5}'Memo was received from Keith Crawford ~egarding approval by the City Manager of $35,000 for installation of electrical lines on the Causeway. 6) 'Chairperson Lanza read the letter she wrote to Mayor and Commissioners regarding a meeting with, ~r. Crawford on holiday decorations. Committee Reports - Holiday Decorati~ns In a meeting with representatives of Beach organizations, Mrs. Whitney reported they would liIte white twinkle lights on the Causeway, a return to the scrolls on the Causeway and multi-colored lights on the tree at the east end of the Causeway.' Also, white twinkle lights around the Civic Center and in Kruse Gardens. On May 27 Mrs. Whitney and Me.Lanza met with Keith Crawford. Report was submitted and is attached. I i ~. He agreed to notify the Committee of such actions in the future. Mr. Wilson was asked whether any landscaping could be required of the strip Btores acrOBS from Cleveland Plaza. He replied that they are not required to do anything. There were some plantings there at one time but they didn't do well. He also said eventually the Cleveland Streetscnpe will be extended to include this area. Chairperson Lan~a reported that K-Mart at Gulf-to-Bay did not do a professional job when their trees were trimmed. She said that part of the landscape code is to maintain trees and bushes. Also. Piggly Wiggly is not,maintaining their trees and b~shes. Shi will follow this up with a letter td each of the businesses. I , , 'Chairperaon'Lanz8 reported that the Bottle Bill is all but dead in the , legislature. , Controlling litter at Jazz Holiday - Chairperson Lanza would like to suggest to the City to give each person coming to the concerts a plastic bag for their , trash and' garbage. When they leave, it can be deposited in a container or taken ,home'for disposal. Mr. Bickerstaffe said more and larger trash cans are needed.
