':" City of Clearwater Beautification Committeo .Minutes November 2, 1983 The Beautification Committee held its regular monthly meeting at the Parks and Recreation Offices, 10 S. Missouri Avenue, on November 2, 1983, at 9&30 a.m. Members present were Dr. Jack Rothman, Chairman, Dr. David Berry, Mrs. Rita Canan, Mrs. L. M. Clark, Mrs. Kathryn Peat, Mr. D. C. Snoyenbos, Ms. M. L. St. Germain and Mrs. Eroma Whitney. Mr. Stephen Abrey and Mr. Frank Krame were excused. Also present was Mr. Ream Wilson, Director of Parks and Recreation Department. The me~ting was called to order by the Chairman who stated that Bob Aude had expressed a desire to step aside because of other responsibilities. This was taken as a resignation from the Committee and accepted as such. Dr. Rothman said Mr. Aude is willing to continue to be active with the project of mangrove preservation and in that regard, he had arranged for Mr. Mike Kenton to be present at this meet- ing to make a presentation on the value of mangroves to the city of Clearwater. 'At this time the chairman introduced Mr. Mike Kenton who is Assistant Public Works Director, Environmental Section. Mr. Kenton distributed a handout Showing the coastal wetlands and describing the types of mangroves and their functions along the coastline. He brought samples of the three mangrove trees, red, black and White, and the buttonwood tree and also seed pods of each of the species to show the members of the Committee. Mr. Kenton explained the importance of man- groves to our environment and also explained their value as a food source and shelter for fish and mammals. Most of the mangroves along Clearwater~s shoreline have been destr?yed. There are some along the north side of the Causeway and at Cooper's Bayou in east Clearwater. Mangroves absorb the energy of wind and water in a stonti and are one of the few or only tree that can survive in that condition. 'There is no better system to withstand storms. '\ Mr. Kenton stated that in regard to environmental management, the pre 1960's was 'the exploitation period, the 1960's the awareness periOd, the 1970's the plan- riingand regUlation period, and the 1980's the restoration period. After some discussion and questions by the Committee, a motion was made by Dr. Berry to have Mr~ .Robin Lewis, a recognized expert in this field, give his 15-minuee slide pre- sentation to the City Commission at a work session. The motion was seconded by Mrs. Canan and passed. or. Rothman will write a letter to the City Manager with copies to the Commission requesting permission for Mr. Lewis to make his presenta- tion to the City Commission. Th~ Chairman and members ?f the committee expressed their appreciation to Mr.. Kenton for his interesting 'and informative .talk. The December meeting will be held at Moccasin Lake Park. Mrs. Canan made a motion to adjourn and it was seconded by Mrs. Whitney, and passed. The meeting adjourned at 11:05 a.m. Respectfully. submitted, Edith Vanderwerp
