I ; '0 City of Clearwater Beautification Committee Minutes September 7, 1983 The Beautification committee held its regular monthly meeting at the Parks and Recreation Offices, 10 South Missouri Avenue, on September 7, 1983, at 9:30 a.m. Members present were Mr. D. C. Snoyenbos, Chairman, Mrs. L. M. Clark, Mr. Frank Krame, Dr. Jack Rothman and Mrs. Emma Whitney. Mr. Robert AUde, Mrs. Rita Canan and Mr. David Berry were excused. Mrs. ,Virginia Custer and Mrs. Kathryn Peat were absent. Mr. Art Kader, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation Department and Mr. Chris Cowles were in attendance for Mr. Ream Wilson who was on vacation. The meeting was called to order by the Chairman. As there were three ex- cused absences, a quorum of the Committee was not present. OLD BUSINESS ; ::"~"'O :..:~ . .~i' '. :'.~~ '. , . ", . " ~evelopment of South Side of Memorial Causeway. Since the parking ban on the causeway, beautification plans for the south side have not been formulated. Mr. Cowles stated that the Parks and Recreation Department will be advertising for the position of Landscape Architect in the next week or two with the hope of filling the position in four to six weeks. The Landscape Architect will be used to': design beautification plans for the redevelopment of the Causeway. His expertise will be a valuable asset. A discussion followed on whether sea oats, sea grasses and mangroves could be planted along the shoreline. Mr. Cowles said that environmentally it is something to consider. .. ~ ' NEW BUSINESS ...;::: ,.' '.~.' " I:. ~.~: Report of Subcommittee. Mr. Snoyenbos reported that Mr. Aude could not, attend the meeting today and will give his report at the October meeting. :,", ,\ School Board position on Landscapin2. Mr. Kader said Mr. Wilson had contacted. "Mr. Greenleaf who is in charge of maintenance of grounds for the School Board. He stated that basicallY, they grade the property and put in sod or seed. They have no fubds for trees, shrubs or flower beds. If there are any plantings or flower beds they are planted and maintained by PTAs, parent organizations or the students. Discussion followed on whether it would be possible to get an inter- ested teache~ to initiafe something like this at various schools. Mr. Kader suggested writing letters to the principals of the various schools to suggest beautification efforts for their school g.rounds. Dr. Rothman stated that the new schools have preserved the natural beauty of their surroundings, namely Curlew Creek and Lila Davis. f. i ~ ~ '/' ~. " . A new appointee is Ms. M. L. St. Germain.
