B. rf,??aney; William Dirchall; Charles Coit; George Dalby and Jack Ruse;ell, Guests: Mayor Alex D. Finch, City Hannger .Tamer R. Stewart and Alan Carlson. Prior to calling the mceting'to order, Mayor Finch and City Manager Stewart asked that the procedure for hiring salo:,men and a oalculady for the City Gary Appliance Division of the UtilitieS Department be decided in order to avoid any misunder- standing. Following a lengthy diocu:ision, it was agreed that the sales personnel would'not be under Civil Snxvice, due to the conditions set up by the City Commission, City Manager and Utilities Sales Manager, Mr. Fred Lucas, under whose supervision they would work. These employees, it waa pointed out, would work on a drawing account plus commission. It was agreeable with the Board that applications.for sale; personnel received by Utilities Sales Manager should be sent to the Director in order that former employers could be contacted and references checked. Mr. Alan Carlson, representative of the Ideal Office Equipment, demonstrated the Stenorette recording machine. No decision was made for purchase. City Manager.Stewart agreed to talk with Mr. Baskin, City Attorney, regarding a recording machine, the same type now in use in.the City Clerk's department. . i? ,i Mr. Coit brought up the subject of granting a week vacation at the end of a six months period. Discussed, but no action taken, since an official request for an amendment to the present rule had not been received,. Following the departure of Mayor Finch and the City Manager, the Chairman called .the meeting to order and asked for a reading of the April minutes. Same were read and accepted. At the invitation of the Board, City Manager Stewart and Fire Chief Dobson were invited to be present'for a discussion of the Driver- Engineer examinations. Chief Dobson'explained'in detail, to the satisfaction of the Board members, the procedure followed in awarding.the $5 extra bi-weekly pay for,those lie considered qualified. Reported on letter from the Board-to the City Attorney as instructions given, rei'Webster McMullen, applicant, Fire Departmenc. Reported on estimated budget- submitted for the Civil Service Board for fiscal year, 1959-1960. Regarding the Community Center Supervisor for the Recreation Department, Board members agreed that an oral interview with the employee presently holding the position be set up, providing such be recommended by the department head. Mr. Dalby and-Mr. Russell. were selected, along with Mr. Moore- and Mr. P.esti ' for the group interview. The Director was instructed to contact the department head on this matter.
